I don't put any faith in the government's word to be honest with you, but yes, as my wife has settled status (although her document does say it is thus unless there is a change in government policy), we are hopefully okay. The remaining 2 million however, goodness only knows. It's this stark situation that is prompting so many to liken no deal to a cliff edge, as so many things change in such a huge way, and the government have done so little to prepare for it. That should worry leave and remain alike as aside from partisan differences, I'm sure most people want this process to go as smoothly as possible.

Bruce, everyone wants these things to go as smoothly as possible, and I’m glad you feel that your wife is ok in this matter. ...

The Guardian sums it up tbf......

“Boris Johnson’s plan to prorogue parliament ahead of a Queen’s speech on 14 October is intended to provoke parliamentarians into blocking a no-deal Brexit, or triggering a general election through a vote of no confidence. Both are feasible in the time available.

The last time parliament stepped in to block no deal earlier in the year, the necessary legislation was passed in just three days. Johnson has deliberately left enough time for parliament to seize control again. That’s because Johnson’s real objective is to use Brexit to win a general election, rather than use a general election to secure Brexit. By forcing the hands of his opponents, he has defined the terrain for a “people versus parliament” election. Expect him to run on “Back Boris, Take Back Britain”. He will say that the only way to definitely leave on 31 October is to give him a parliamentary majority to do so. The man of Eton, Oxford and the Telegraph will position himself as the leader of the people against the hated establishment and “remainer elite”.

Johnson’s electoral strategy is simple: unite the Brexit-supporting right of politics behind him while remainers are fractured across Labour, the SNP, Liberal Democrats and Greens. Since the day he took office, Johnson has been acting to consolidate the votes of leave supporters behind him. From Brexit party supporters to leave-backing Labour voters, Johnson has sought to create a winning electoral coalition.”.....
Well that makes more sense.

The big problem I see with this is the Brexit party. Does he come to a pre election agreement with them and they focus on the labour/LD strongholds.

Interesting that a pro remain paper should pick up on this.

As I said Pete, the document she has expressly says unless there is a change in government policy, which isn't exactly a cast iron guarantee in my opinion. The Tories have expressed a hostile attitude towards migrants for years, so it's not an especially nice time right now.

Sorry, do about what? What will the EU do about how the UK treat EU citizens? I believe the withdrawal agreement May negotiated secured the rights of both EU and UK citizens, but god only knows what the state of play is for Brits in Europe should Johnson yank us out with no deal. As someone backing such an action, it's kinda sad that you seem to have no idea either.

The U.K. have been clear about EU citizens in the U.K., the EU are a little less clear about U.K. citizens within the EU....

Some revisionist history going on there, and the trouble using someone else's opinion. Its a point of fact that it's only the LibDems who are currently fractured from the vofnc remain coalition, it's all very different now..

Without wishing to be snarky, it's worth noting that the Lib Dems supported that motion, and Corbyn failed to attract a majority because several Labour MPs broke ranks.
Obviously some would, the lack of Tory support, who put party before country, was where i believe his comment was aimed.

It is no doubt what the plan is, and it is the Bannon playbook (which makes Boris' denial of having anything to do with him even more of a lie than it was at the time) - though they must have a really low opinion of the electorate if they honestly expect them to believe that a government which has been in power for nine years, led by a man who went to a school that defines the British Establishment, who went to the University that defines the British establishment, who had two establishment wives and who now has an entirely establishment bit on the side, and which will have 90% of the press establishment backing it, is in fact not part of the establishment.

Trump could (just) do it because he following Obama and because of who Hilary was; Boris could well have far more of a problem with Corbyn.

I think he will, he knows that there are certain seats that no Tory could ever win, but by standing back and allowing the Tory vote to be added to a Labour Brexit split constituency, that’s one less labour MP. Mind you, Boris may rather just do it on his own.....interesting for sure....

OK. With people reporting it's only an extra 4/5 days I assumed it normally closed for 4 weeks.
It could be that they mean it’s only an extra 4/5 days compared with normal proroguing situations which have apparently been mainly a week or less since the 1980’s.

Guess the important thing here though is that this is not a normal proroguing situation so it seems it really is 2 weeks extra. And also 5 weeks total at a time when they should really be sorting stuff out.

Apologies if I’ve not explained my point properly there, still trying to get my head round the situation

Keep on believing that and Boris will walk it......
