There are some world class hospitals and providers in the States, but the overall system is so dysfunctional its unreal.
They're beautiful but they eat money like crazy. They pay huge wages, overcharge for services and overpay for drugs. I'd love a non-profit business that people had to use and I didn't have to pay any tax for so I can just keep improving my business and paying myself loads.

For an orthopedic surgeon for example
Lowest average state wage in USA was $311,000, highest was $437,000
Uk average is 142,000gbp ($179,000)

The whole business model seems to encourage wastefulness though (in terms of costs). I'm no devotee to the NHS way of doing things, and there are numerous other systems out there that have merit, but the American system would be bottom of the pile. I suppose the challenge is, could any of those suppliers function here? How would having different suppliers influence things like NICE?

In reality of course, they're all academic, as the very concept is so abhorrent to most Brits that it wouldn't even get off the ground. Indeed, you have to wonder just how stupid Trump is to even bring it up. It's stupid enough for the ambassador to do so, as you'd imagine he was at least a bit more culturally aware than Trump.

Or. The ambassador was primed to drop the soundbite into his interview with Marr, so a primed journo could ask the simple question, "Do you agree with the ambassador?".

Meaning Trump isnt seen to be raising the issue himself.

That seems more likely. It's odd that an ambassador would be on the Marr show in the first place, so he must have been prompted to go on. The question is, to what end? It's hard to imagine even the most rabid Tory would want the NHS opened up in this way, so who is gaining from these remarks?

The amount of money the US right has spent on Tory-supporting thinktanks, lobbyists and politicians would suggest that they probably look to gain from this talk.

Merican pharmas.

He has got the brexiteers swooning with his remarks about a tremendous deal, then made the NHS apparently in play, which no one really thought about. Till now.

Is that going to be enough for him to go all in on for remain?
It's not about him though, and i'm sure he's been aware of all this/the implications of a us trade deal. What shocks me most is that they're not calling an emergency meeting to vote on whether to change tack, iirc the next one's scheduled for October, unless i've got my wires crossed...

I thought the pharma industry already have access to the NHS though? It's just that NICE mandates the price hospitals can buy it for. So unless NICE is dismantled...

The last few years have been a complete balls up all round to be honest.

We are on the cusp of a monumental [Poor language removed] up that will make the country worse for our children and beyond. We'll go down in history as the bad knobhead generation, the generation that not only allowed the rise of idiots but one that enabled them.
Good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth if you oppose that you're an absolute disgrace of a person.

Where to start:
Government policy is a deal is the preferred choice however no deal planning is back on the table with urgency. Awaiting ministerial approval, but start planning

DFT’s transport plan for no deal has been declared insufficient with no engagement with local resilience groups

No sites identified for transit goods from the EU, the whole mass trailer park theory was just that because they never actually identified any to progress with

Treasury are not releasing any updates on duty free tariffs at airports until the last minute. The lack of information from them is unreal leaving airports in the dark

Before Parliament recess they are hoping to have approval for no deal planning recommence, but this may not be the case.

They reckon it’ll be about September before the government make a firm decision on which they’re going (so 2 months before the deadline)

By the sounds of they’re expecting a hardline Brexiteer to be appointed (probably the clown) hence the ramping up of no deal preparedness.

The only good bit of new is the french and British authorities seem to be in agreement about “working relationships” in the event of a no deal

I’ve had 2 months of peace. It’s been amazing, actually got stuff done that I’m paid to do. But I feel the storm clouds gathering again, and this will be a tornado by the looks of it. Hold onto your hats chaps

Update more once I have further news in the coming weeks

P.S. thanks Dave, a lovely mess you left us with xx

I guess its not the details stage yet, more the passive aggressive threat.

As in, before the super duper trade deal gets signed off, "So Boris, now lets talk about the NHS....."
