Jean Claude Juncker - head of the commission since 2014 - is a federalist and wants rid of member states entirely as they get in the way.

He's from Luxemberg which explains things.

Cameron didn't want him and his appointment and - based on Cameron's knowledge he would NEVER back proper reform - was the beginning of the end really.

Juncker has said some despicable things about Britain. As he just doesn't like us because in 1992 we ruined his little project.

Up to 2014 we would have historically had a veto on his appointment. So this explains why what has happened was made more likely.

The worrying thing is that the UKIP trouble makers have no idea how to run a major economy like the UK.

They promise the earth but frankly look as inept as they sound.

I am European, my good Man. and Irish. and Argentine. and an anglophile of the highest order.

and I really hate nationalism.

I think you'll find that the European Union was founded as an association of member states.

Nationalism is not necessarily a bad thing. As long its not taken to excess.

However, I think that political shortsightedness within Europe along with the events of 2008/2009 has led to today.

Jean Claude Juncker - is certainly a major reason for what has happened. No doubt in my mind.

When would you consider nationalism to be a good thing? Not having a go. Just out of interest. For me it contributes to creating a tribal culture of in groups and out groups and is an archaic concept.

When people talk about 'social cohesion'.

Where do you think that comes from?

Your view is the same as Juncker's.

However, not everyone agrees with him - which has resulted in what has happened.

Why should the UK be dictated to by the ex PM of a country of less than half a million people?

I'm saying Juncker messed it up big time. He was too focused on his own agenda.

Devaluation when its across the board against all major currencies is never good.

That's just not true, for the reasons explained by Dean Baker in the link I provided.

He tells the story succinctly in this clip (just change "dollar" to "sterling").

It's a dream world to think the UK could suddenly not need imported goods.

Nobody is claiming that the UK does not need to import any goods.

A weaker pound makes foreign goods more expensive here, hence leading British consumers to purchase fewer imports and encouraging them to instead turn to buying more domestically-produced goods, hence increasing domestic aggregate demand, and thus lowering unemployment, etc.

This is why Martin Wolf wrote that the fall in sterling "might cushion the effect [of Brexit] on output, at least in the medium term."

A fall in the value of a currency is not always and automatically a bad thing.

I get the premise, but while it may create jobs as purchasing domestically increases (likely more expensive due higher wages), jobs would be lost all over the show in places that require imported goods.

More high-wage jobs are a good thing.

Also, the increase in domestic demand would create more jobs than would be lost, especially when aggregate demand is low - as is the case now.

Anyway, I'm off to bed comrade.

Not at the cost of increasing the cost of goods.
