Why not? From their point of view, this is a golden opportunity to get rid of her as PM. They can vote against her, get rid of her, then reform a government with someone who does hold the confidence of the house. A vote of no confidence does not automatically result in a general election.

You're correct in what you say.

But there is no one in the tory party who can take over and unite them so for that reason, they won't topple May just yet. You need a leader waiting to take over immediately to form another government to avoid an election. I don't see any way May can be toppled tomorrow and an election isn't called.

Total waste of time innit.

Corbyn’s only “tactic” throughout this imbroglio has been “we need a general election”.

He is as hapless as May is.

Hopefully this brings down the curtain on his tenure as Labour leader.

I am certainly not a fan, but in fairness he has to call the motion. Its a complete no brainer. The government has just lost by 230.

TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY VOTES.

These are totally bizarre times.

Loss of a vote of no confidence will result in a general election. Watch the Tory rats rally round now to avoid this situation

The government has to be changed before we can have anything - a renegotiation, a peoples vote, a unilateral withdrawal of article 50. In that sense he is entirely correct to prioritize removing them first, before doing anything else.

Nope - the loss of a vote of no confidence results in the government falling; it does not result in a GE unless 2/3 of the Commons votes for one or fourteen days passes without a motion of confidence in a government passing.

Splitting hairs - it won’t happen anyway as the Govt will win any vote of no confidence tabled by the opposition.

14 days isn't a feasible time scale for the tories to find a leader who can command the house. It's completely unrealistic to think the tories can topple May tomorrow, somehow bring themselves out of disarray, and find a new leader in under two weeks.

If May loses tomorrow there will be an election. That's why she is never going to lose.

Which has been the cretins in the EU's hope all along, they've been as awkward as can be in the hope we stay, they are crapping themselves if we become independent of them again, because it may just work out to be a massive advantage for us as a nation, they'll still have to trade as freely as they do with us and they know it, 6 months down the line of no deal and we'll wonder what all the scaremongering was about leaving.

I disagree; in fact I'd be absolutely amazed if there werent Tories going around right now speaking to the anti-Corbyn group and some others on the opposition benches asking what they would need to support a deal, starting with a different PM.
