There is a way round this conundrum of course:

Agree to an 'NI only' backstop which would mean the rest of the UK could completely leave the SM and CU. The EU won't object to that - their issue is that the right of NI citizens to remain in the EU has to be upheld which is why there is a backstop.

But in order to appease the DUP May would not agree to it. Take the DUP out of the issue and the problem all but disappears.

Isn't it about time the people of Britain pulled the plug on the DUP ?

The upshot of that shows that the country was sold down the river into binding arrangements with no recourse going back through the Lisbon and Maastricht treaties.
This should have been clear and presented to the people prior to the referendum.
We voted to leave but the reality is we cannot, I had assumed as much prior to the vote. An entity as huge and complex as the EEC becoming the EU was never not going to be loophole free. It is the Borg.
Where it leaves us now is having to dance completely to the EU's tune.
Corporatocracy triumphs.
It's hard to say really mate. The Conservatives have hijacked the vote for their ultra-free market ends, so when demanding the ability to import crap food and lower standards will get a far different response from labour.
Also, our government applies directives in a far more favourable way to corporations than other eu members, unfortunately, is that colouring your opinion somewhat?

Not really. Poland could leave (if it wanted) because they don't have a politically sensitive border with a member state bound up in their membership. We do. People mentioned Ireland very early on but were dismissed as project fear.

Exactly right.

By leaving Ireland in the Customs Union then GB can have the Brexit it voted for.

The Irish Toffees on here have consistently said since the referendum that Brexit simply could not happen under the agreed constitutional arrangement.

We really aren’t as British as Finchley after all then..

So, me saying 'cannot' is correct and not open to Polish comparison?

I will give it a go,
They already have a border in ireland that copes with different taxes, laws, vat and a currency and cross country open borders for people.
The EU have made it a problem when it needs not be,( for example the Swiss border which is a none EU economic zone country with access into the EU its far more busy in traffic and people numbers, than the irish one, there are booths at some crossing but they are to see if vehicles have the Swiss permit to drive on there roads that all vehicles need EU or not, good and people cross easily.)
The EU have used this as a tool to bambuzal May and she has fell for it.
i knew what @Joey66 was trying to say even if you don't
