Interesting, reading this morning a study looking at social media activity on this topic. Turns out most leave supporters spoke primarily with other leave supporters, and what's more, they spoke primarily with other leave supporters from their own town. Given how intransigent the views appear to have been on here though, I'm not sure it would make much difference if they did step out of the echo chamber.

Obviously not, but statistically, not every Brexit voter is pig ignorant and can see they need to exercise their democratic rights to ensure they get the Brexit they voted for...

It's a useful crutch to dismiss any and every attempt to actually understand things, as by their nature studies don't ask every single person, nor provide certainty of conclusion. They're also wrong as well as right, and so Joe, OldBlue et al feel they can dismiss them due to their imperfection, seemingly oblivious to the fact that no one really claims they're perfect, but rather that they're a whole lot better than not attempting to study matters at all, which leaves one even more ignorant, which is the path they appear to prefer.

As an aside, whilst OldBlue is correct in that we can't predict the future, Philip Tetlock has shown that some people are much better at it than others via his Good Judgement Project - https://www.gjopen.com/ - and found that specific knowledge on a topic isn't what makes someone good at forecasting in that domain, but rather being open-minded and following the evidence. It's also noticeable how so called 'superforecasters' don't tend to trade in absolutes, but rather make heavy use of probabilities.

Really- simple propaganda at its best Billy Liar would have been proud of that leaflet ........ oh and even with that they still lost £9 million down the pan of tax payers money.... and they have an electoral commission on the backs of both camps - hypocrisy at its worse......

This article says it all-

Rather £9m than the £50billion it is going to cost us to leave the EU.

How many hospitals could we build and staff with £50billion?

wow people talking to there neighbours shocker.

don't do either , honestly couldnt tell you what twitter looked like

I guess the point of the paper was that social media is widely accused of creating echo chambers, but in reality, they instead replicate the echo chambers that largely exist in our offline life. As I said, this thread is perhaps a good example of how hard it can be to shift ones views, even if you are exposed to those of a different opinion. We can perhaps all agree though that being entrenched in whatever way is not ideal.
