"In practice we are unlikely to want to lower our regulatory standards"

Walter Mitty May is in a right pickle and hasn't a clue what to do about the UK leaving the EU.

“If we are out of the European Union with tariffs on exporting goods into the EU, there’d have to be something to recognise that, between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

“And if you pulled out of the EU and came out of free movement, then how could you have a situation where there was an open border with a country that was in the EU and has access to free movement.” This was Theresa May's announcement in 2016.

May said that there can't be an open border between a country with free movement of people (The Irish republic) and one that hasn't (Northern Ireland). Checking passports is a hard border and is against the rights of Irish citizens having free movement on the island of Ireland.

This completely contradicts what she said today.

"Q: [From a French journalist] Isn’t it time you told the truth, that there will be a border in Northern Ireland? Maybe a light border, but there will be a border.

May says she has been very clear; there will be no return to a hard border in Northern Ireland.

And she will maintain the common market of the UK, she says".

Q: [From a German journalist] Is Brexit worth it in the light of what you are saying today?

May says, if that was a question about whether the UK will think again, it won’t. She says the people took the decision. It is up to parliament to implement it, she says.

Unlike some politicians, she is being straight with people, she says".

'Straight with people', you just couldn't make it up. She needs to explain why in 2016 there can't be an open border but now there can. She needs to explain why there will be UK border guards checking passports on the island of Ireland. Because one country has free movement and the other doesn't. She needs to explain how that is compatible with the Good Friday Agreement.

Q: [From ITV’s Robert Peston.] People voted to take back control. But today you are promising not to exercise the control you are taking back. So what was the point of Brexit?

May says people voted to take back control of money, borders and laws. That will happen. In some areas it will make sense to operate on the same basis as now. But the decision will be for parliament.

There will be commitments. But that happens in any trade deal, she says". How can the UK take back control of its' borders without a border on the island of Ireland. Nonsensical.

Her whole speech today was just full of the usual we would like to....But there was no concrete proposals for dealing with the island of Ireland issue. One of the central issues facing the UK.

May needs to resign forthwith as her and her gang of fools are not up to the task.

Typical response from a avid remainer!

The negativity of the how if we leave the
the roof will fall in - spelt out today how it could be negotiated, but the EU will not want a black hole in their budget from the 2nd highest money contributer!

Where is the 'negativity'? I merely pointed out May said in 2016 that there would have to be a border on the island of Ireland to check passports and goods, and now she says there doesn't need to be one. May has not explained why she changed her mind. If that was an EU negotiator changing their mind, you would be all over them like a rash calling the change due 'bully boy tactics'. What has changed between 2016 and 2018 for May to do a somersault in thinking about a border?

As far as the black hole goes in their budget goes. Every time they negotiate a trade deal it means a black hole in their budget due to reduced tariff money, they actively promote trade deals even though it means reduced income. They cope with that so they will cope with the loss of UK money. All they will do is reduce money out by a 4 percent to compensate for UK money.

The single market puts unnecessary tarrifs on our goods fact!

The more the EU negotiates trade deals the more there is less tariffs. If tariffs are a bad thing why are the likes of Rees Mogg threatening WTO tariffs on EU goods? Which would include putting border checks on the island of Ireland. A bizarre response from someone who riles against tariffs. The no tariff tariff man needs to spend less time on tax dodging and more on finding out what is going on in the real world.

If you are a leave voter i can't understand how you wouldn't be critical of May and her team

You voted for Brexit and they seem to be making a right hash out of it. They're essentially ruining what you hold dear, and you're just letting them

Shouldn't you be staying on top of these people so that we have a good Brexit? The Brexit you say you want?

Why is it the remainers are essentially having to do your job for you? Do you just want Brexit at any cost? Start holding May to account, she might actually listen to you lot

He is not running the country, again tell me why the customs union not only stops us trading world wide but carries tarrifs for small to medium sized business full of red tape!

The customs union doesn't stop the UK trading world wide. The tariffs the UK collects, 2,4 billion goes to the EU with a quarter, 800 million, going to the UK treasury. These tariffs go away the more trade deals are struck. As far as red tape there will always be some form of red tape as UK firms have to fill in forms when trading with China, India, Russia etc. now. That will not change when the UK leaves the EU, if it ever does mind.

As far as the tax dodging Rees Mogg goes, one of his motives for not liking the EU is because they want to clamp down on offshore tax havens. It is in his self interest that others don't poke their nose into tax havens.

Barnier and co will give her and her negotiating team a punishment beating they'll never forget. That tweet he made yesterday was dripping in sarcasm, but the British political commentariat, by and large, chose to take it at face value. They'll get their arses handed back to them in the coming weeks. I suspect the hardline Brexiteers know this and are laughing up their sleeve waiting for May to be "shown how intransigent" the EU are by rejecting her "compromises" of organised chaos on the Irish border and her continued demand to cherry pick which parts of the single market her government wish to trade with.

I doubt we'll see a point where trade agreements are discussed. I can see a no deal situation hurtling down the tracks and then the rest of the UK parliament will really demand to take control of this unfolding disaster.
