Why has he been in touch Bruce ?
you just do not grasp that hollands horticultural industries are heavily subsidised and the UK ones are not and the wages the fruit picker get from the EU sometimes pay is included in accomodation living in a barn!

It was a joke mate. Pete/peat. It spoils it when you have to explain it.

Oh dear you have been on here replying to my posts for an age and I have been banging on about the common market how we went in { no Vote } and you spout rubbish then realise you were wrong, and you answer is -
You didn’t specify the year love x
I told you should have been an MP love xlol
Firstly I was obviously being sarcastic, secondly you didn’t specify the year - fact

I do realise that being a leaver facts aren’t your thing, you prefer land of milk and honey delusions. So apologies for using facts again, it’s a bad habit I’ve got.

I was more skilled in the end of a strawberry picker Bruce but as a young 16 year old did field work and later on - I met the great geoff hamilton invited to the city of Liverpool to give a lecture on peat free growing, and a top propagator and grower - and became a member of the institute of Horticulture - if you are saying their would be no horticultural young workers in the UK well you are way off the mark - if there were proper apprenticeships on offer and not just cheap labour then there lies the underlying problem of this country atm!

In this particular case I am not sure. There are loads of apprenticeships/similar schemes in place in Holland. They still have trouble attracting workers even though they pay a decent wage. As a result 60 percent is foreign and they get payed as much as a domestic worker gets. The reason is quite simple: there are jobs available that pay the same wage and are a whole lot less intensive. A Polish et al. person is happy doing the job because for him/her it's a high wage.

The Dutch Horticultural industry is over subsidised - oil gas heating for glasshouse etc - when I took on my apprenticeship in the U.K. The youth did not like the stigma of Horticulture you were classed as a guy with a piece of straw in their mouths this soon changed when I becam ein management qualifications to get a basic apprenticeship rose and the clomaour for apprentices increased our commercial nurseries have almost burnt and died due to the unfair EU completion of Hollands subsidies!

How is Dutch horticulture subsidised exactly?

It's their main industry their government supply discounted fuel heating of glasshouses potting compost etc they are great growers but factory produce their plants- then flood our markets wit them - the U.K. Has recently had a resurgence mainly in the cut flower industry on U.K. Old fashioned flowers it's the same way as our car industry went years ago we are fighting back a bit on an un level playing field - our pot plant - bedding Horticultural industries have struggled so many shut down over the years.
As the UK garden centre chains have turned to buying at auction via the subsidised Dutch route the highest layout in glasshouse production is fuel
Labour is now much more computerised as a grower I had all that grew 1/2 a million plants per year to high standards with top technology!
I had 4 hectares of glass and four staff!
