The fella Verhofstadt gave an extremely negative and inaccurate representation of modern Belfast. It's almost like he had an agenda to push....

I find it appalling anytime these people talk like peace can be turned on and off like a switch. You can't bluff and BS an Ulsterman.

He’s an EU zealot. He doesn’t give a crap about NI or Ireland, he just wants to stick one on the U.K.. I t was he who arranged for today’s MEP vote on whether the U.K. has made enough progress in the talks to warrant discussion about a trade deal. They just don’t get that we are leaving and that we just need an orderly exit on both sides of the channel.....

Of course there's a decision for Ireland to make. Do they prioritise UK trade or European trade.

The UK can cope with Ireland slapping trade barriers or a tariff or something. But then UK would simply reciprocate it and Ireland would be crippled. It's already happened. See De Valera.

And for that reason it won't happen this time. Trade will remain seamless as Ireland will agree a free trade deal as it's in the interests of both countries.

So your saying nothing changes then. Haha!! Ireland isn't going to react all it wants is a proper plan for NI. The Taoiseach has already made that clear.

But Isn't that what the British Government wanted to leave the EU but keep all of its current deals in place?

You are the one suggesting that not me. By saying Ireland will "choose" or should "choose" Britain over the EU.

There's no choosing here.

What do you expect Ireland to do? Or what are you expecting to happen?

Remember Britain is stuck right now with your homeland being the biggest issue. Seems like Ireland has the one up on the British government because the biggest brexit headache is Northern Ireland.

But go ahead tell me what Ireland needs to do for Britain?

The U.K. doesn’t have an issue. We are not putting in a hard border, how many more times must it be said. There is no ‘one up’ between Ireland and the U.K. Ireland can continue to trade with the U.K. without any trade barriers. If it chooses not to then that is up to itself.....

Great idea this brexit thing

We want to leave but we want everything to remain the same.

Why are you guys even arguing then? You seem to think everything will be rosy between Britain and Ireland after the fact as well nothing will change according to both of you.

Anglo irish free trade predates the EU by a most 30 years. Ireland is clearly different than continental Europe. It always has been. To suggest ireland and Britain just see each other as fellow EU citizens, no different than the other couple of dozen countries, is just absurd.

I never suggested that.

I am from Ireland i understand the history and complexity of it all.

Seems like the both of you are going in circles seen with this. We are all in agreement you guys hate the EU and Ireland and Britain remains the same?

We are leaving the EU, we are leaving the ECJ, we are leaving having the EU negotiate our trade deals. The countries within the EU will still wish to trade with us, for our part we wish free trade, the EU may not, irrespective of what the EU wants we will offer free trade to Ireland with no hard border. So we wish to leave, we would like most things to be sensible, but if the EU do not wish it then we go to WTO but give Ireland a special deal, just like Verhofstadt suggested the EU give to NI........

No, only you keeps telling us that we hate the EU, I’ve told you I do not, I just don’t wish to be part of it......

Less EU and more Anglo irish cooperation is indeed what I'd like. It's beneficial for both countries. And yes I don't like the EU. What started as an excellent trading union has become an undemocratic sham.

Pull the other one Pete. If i was to go through the hundreds of comments you have made about them (which i wont i have better things to do) its mostly anti EU and negative. Not forgetting the name calling on its committee members and members in general

A thread on EU or not has 1400 pages. I'm sure a lot of it is you and i'm sure there a re a few dingers about the EU in there.

I agree with this 100%

Less EU i do agree with in parts also as they have been frustrating to the Irish people at times.

At least you admit you do not like the EU (unlike someone we know haha!!). Stand by your beliefs and opinion.

So when I ask what else, apart from providing our own money, that they have done you tell me about how the money was spent. So they did nothing.

Oh no, the EU would never claim that they brought peace would they, have a look at their acceptance speech when they gave themselves the Nobel Peace prize for bringing peace to Europe. No mention of the USA, UK, Canadian, Australian or Empire troops. Oh no, they would never take the credit......

Edit....additionally......

So you have gone from saying, that the EU claimed it was responsible for bring peace to Northern Ireland to producing an EU pamphlet 'From War to Peace', their acceptance of the Nobel Peace prize. How bizarre. +

Additionally, the video of the DUP MEP Diane Doods. The DUP voted against the Good Friday Agreement which is widely attributed to bringing peace on the island of Ireland. The DUP voted against the GFA due to the 'vote for a United Ireland' clause and the cross border institutes, which is a snails pace towards a united Ireland. They had to embrace it otherwise they would have lost any semblance of trying to influence events and would have become a spent political force. They are agitating for a 'Brexit means Brexit for all the UK' 'no single market or customs union for the island of Ireland' which will mean a hard Brexit on the island of Ireland. As this is in direct conflict with the provisions of the GFA, and the Northern Ireland Act 1998 - which has mechanisms for ECJ jurisdiction in Northern Ireland - this will lead to a breakdown in the GFA and make it obsolete.

May's political reliance on the DUP has forced her to be extremely vague about what needs to be done on the island of Ireland as shown in her position paper. The EU have been forced to point out to the Tories that, this and that is in the Good Friday Agreement so the UK cannot do this or that. It is the DUP that are attempting to use Northern Ireland as a bargaining chip as they attempt to put the political squeeze on May.

So you still cannot tell me one single thing, apart from spending our money, that the EU have done for the peace process....

Oh and I now see that the EU are taking Ireland to the EU court for not reclaiming the ‘Apple tax’, that will go down well....

I don’t hate the EU, I just don’t like it and I want to leave it. There will be many comments of mine criticising the EU, all of them justified and appropriate. I think the direction that the Junckers of this world are taking the EU is wrong.......
