No fan of Blair's, but I do wonder how many leave voters are aware of the rights the British government already has regarding EU migrants? For instance, how many know that migrants can be sent back to their homeland if they don't have work within six months of arrival? Or that they aren't able to claim any welfare for a few years (I think it's 2)? Or that the government have unused funds to help towns cope with changes in population levels?

No idea Bruce, but this is a cynical attempt to turn the Brexit argument into a single issue (immigration) when it isn't. It is very clever and smacks of an EU approach.

Failure to play the ball and not the man. Yellow card!

Persistant hypocrisy. Second yellow!

I propose a one week suspension from the EU thread

1) he's not a poster on GOT, deserves to be in prison, so I'm not bothered.
2) accusation of persistent hypocracy to a fellow GOT member is obviously an attempt at playing the man.
3) you'd miss me.......

Aside from Blair's motives, the question remains though, does it not? There was some confusion earlier this week on the methods used to measure migration, so I do wonder if those for whom migration was a factor in this vote understand what powers the government already has to 'manage' migration, both in terms of numbers coming in, what they can do whilst here, and how population fluctuations within the country can be supported.

As I said before the vote itself, the government already has power to do things in each of these areas, but they largely choose not to. Leaving the EU seems a rather extreme response when put in that context.

Bruce I would agree, if it were a single issue, but it's not. Even the single issue of immigration just showed the inflexibility of the EU in their unwillingness to 'throw Cameron a bone'. They totally misread the UK and this mistrust of them is growing......

Why would they 'throw Cameron a bone' when the government already has a huge number of tools that they don't use? None of the restrictions on EU migrants, whether on benefits claiming or removal if they don't have work are used by the government, whilst the dedicated EU fund to help towns that receive an influx of people is ignored in favour of a British fund that is both massively underfunded, and some way below what the EU would offer.

It suits the government to cast the EU as the villain though I suppose as the alternative would be to cast them as utterly hopeless. It's a shame the one thing they are remarkably good at is pulling wool over people's eyes.

Cameron did not cast the EU as a villain. He wanted to stay in it. He had skeptics in his party and indeed the population in general, hence the vote. But the EU gave him nothing, because they believed we would not vote leave. Now we have, it looks like Juncker is desperate to use Blair (because he's burnt his bridges with May) something to promise us to pave the way to remain. Pure EU cynicism......

1) Same for Trump, yet you were having a moan on the America thread that people were being too mean to him. Another yellow for hypocrisy - the equivalent of throwing punches after already being sent off.
2) It's not libel if it's true
3) Guilty :) It's now basically just you and @Old Blue 2 blue still trying to edify this absurdity, and his posts are all so dour, bitter, and worst of all, repetitive. Your attempts to rationalize the mess are much more... ahem.... creative, and they often make me laugh - though I doubt that was the intent.

You'd be surprised......

I was thinking more of leave campaigners, who regularly tagged the EU as a villain that wanted nothing more than to force its will upon us poor, plucky Brits.

I'd like to consider myself a decently centred individual, I mean the Sunday Times is my Sunday paper of choice and I enjoy the Red Box podcast for views from the 'other side'. However, should the bill pass tonight then it will remove the last standing pillar on which I built my vote to Leave last year. The bill is completely undemocratic and represents nothing more than a blatant power grab from this swivel-eyed government.

Just as a point of interest and not kicking off (sad that I've got to put that before I post in this thread!) do you think you made the right choice, and what was it that made you vote leave? I mean right now, not when you voted.

Given that all the other pillars that I built my vote upon have completely collapsed already absolutely not.
