Libya floods wipe out quarter of city, death toll passes 2,000
More than 2,000 people were killed and at least 10,000 were missing in Libya in floods caused by a huge Mediterranean storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern coastal city of Derna.www.reuters.com
It's probably me being a duffer like, but I was listening to a scientist yesterday whilst I was shelling beans and he was saying that in the UK when the media/gov. are speaking about reducing carbon consumption the discourse is always in terms of an average and how that's very misleading as there is an extreme wealth disparity here. The poor majority have far less consumption to reduce than the top ten percent with their multiple flights, vehicles, houses and attendant consumption and this needs to be reinforced as much as possible. I'd just never considered that aspect before, because, as he claims, it's usually presented as an average like 'we're all in it together' whereas we certainly aren't.As devastating as that is, it is clearly no comparison to the slight inconvenience of giving up your SUV. Now that is worth taking to the streets and protesting.
Its presented that way both for honest and dishonest reasons, one of the concepts currently discussed is how to reduce doom-ism and keep people engaged in a concept they believe can be achieved, also public opinion and public pressure are important weapons, and you again want people to feel engaged and empowered, few things are more discouraging than being a passive stakeholder in your own environment.
