It’s always a bit of a tautology though when people talk about this.

Everyone agrees that governments should cut out unnecessary “waste”. It’s in the definition, it’s waste. No-one would argue to keep or increase waste.

It’s all about the implementation, where someone decides “spending on homeless people? Spending on domestic abuse victims? Sounds like waste of money to me”.

You or I could easily cut $500b from US spending if we just didn’t give a damn about the consequences to people.

No way. Surely Musk isn’t just going to slash funding in things like healthcare and education to free up money for tax cuts and more government contracts and subsidies to SpaceX. He just wants to help everyone pursue the “American Dream”.

That is what it usually means, but if instead it was looking at genuine waste, the things that anyone who has worked in the public sector would immediately recognize (vastly overpriced billing for goods and services for example) then there’s scope for real savings.

Even more opportunities exist when you consider policy changes, for example the choice of successive UK Governments to deliver social housing via paying Housing Benefit rather than building social housing and being a landlord itself. The former burns money, the latter generates it yet (thanks to so many MPs being landlords) we always choose to waste taxpayer money.

Such is the narcissistic mind of Elon, I think he will have some sort of weird power battle with Trump. Trump gets played by people of power, we have seen this time and again, let us see how this ends up.
