I suspect he approached SpaceX with a little less hubris than Twitter, but who knows; at the very least, it's clear from watching him run Tesla that he doesn't understand anything beyond a superficial level. He's not putting people into space, he simply hiring people and (supposedly) letting them do their job.
Whether Twitter is "just words on a screen," even egomaniacal wrecks don't spend $44B if they believe it's "just words on a screen." Bezos paid ~$250 million for WaPo, one of the world's leading news organizations. Granted that was a decade ago, but $250 million for "words on a screen" vs $44B for "words on a screen" is a significant valuation change (that's roughly 176,000x more for Twitter) between two different types of "words on a screen."
The secret is to not over think it. It's a social media platform.
