Partly right, but not entirely. He was brought into the starting line up at the last minute for his debut because somebody got injured in the warm up, but he was obviously selected on the bench to begin with, and he'd already been on the bench a few times that season. He just missed out under 23 level completely because he was deemed good enough, and he was elevated above the likes of James Wilson, who I'm pretty sure is still on United's books and himself had a prolific record in junior football. Greenwood is following a similar path, just as Rooney, Rodwell, Davies etc have with us. Some players are thought to have what it takes from a very young age, some aren't. Again, coaches might not always get it right, but it's rarely quite the guesswork some fans suggest it is.From what I remember he was brought in because of an injury crisis but hit the ground running and hasn't looked back since. Don't think anybody actually thought at the time he was anywhere near good enough. Could be wrong like..
