ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC"

And we'd won the FA Cup twice before they won it for first time in 1965 (and then us again in 1966). But, I digress, cos no doubts they sped away from us from the 1970's onwards. My main point is that alot of their fans and definitely the media (Sky and BT) lord up this 'historic' rivalry. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and Everton v Liverpool was all that mattered (locally). Everton v Man Utd was as big as Liverpool v Man Utd. No difference. Only since Ferguson turned them round, started catching Liverpools trophy haul, and surpassed their league wins did this rivalry spiral beyond recognition. Sky perpetuated it. Fair enough, and worldwide support for both clubs enhances it. Our demise hasn't helped either.

I think they'd won the cup once by the 1960's.

Everton had fantastic young teams obliterated by both the wars. in 194 our best striker Collins got shot and was never the same. In 1939 Jones never recovered from injury while Mercer and Lawton both left. I suspect we'd have won 3-4 more (at least) had wars not interrupted us. It would have put us on 8 or 9 to 2 from United and 4 for Liverpool (though only 1 FA cup). We were by far and away the dominant team up until the end of WW2.

From 1970 onwards both United and Liverpool have each had 20 years of remarkable success that sets them apart from all other teams. If you take this two decades out of it, they are comparable to most other clubs and perhaps even slightly behind a number.

It's enormous credit to both that they have dominated for such a period which no other club have managed. Nobody should take that away from them. However the 2 World Wars robbed us us a significant opportunity to do the same. It should also be noted, for the 130 year history of the English League, the majority of that time the rivalry between United and Liverpool has not been a particularly big one. Neither has the line now being trotted out by kopites (there has always been a respect for the two biggest clubs) got any basis in evidence, as for the majority of the history of English Football United and Liverpool were also rans, at times well behind their City rivals.

The rivalry has developed from a mutual arrogance, ignorance and entitlement that both set of fans have and a belief they are above basic standards of behaviour. That is the truth behind the rivalry. It's not two "big brothers" having it out, but two spoilt children who won't comprehend reality and will spin evidence to suit their behaviour.

Nice to see Liverpool won their cup final again, by hammering Mourinho's United 0-0. How many years now is it since they last won their cup final against United in a league game? 3? 4? 5? 6? They are nearly as bad as us (with none of the honesty though!).

In terms of the size of the fixture it is our version of the El Classico

Two biggest and most successful clubs against each other

Only one of them isn't very good anymore...

Still the biggest game in england though

I only caught the last half hour but I was shocked at how bad the atmosphere was. The RS had corners with minutes to go and there was nothing, if that was a massive game at goodison the place would be on fire
