I think Liverpool were probably more popular amongst your neutral than Leeds were. Certainly Pre-Heysel anyway. Leeds struggled with the "Dirty" tag

Success in Europe probably helped as well, as back then it was more acceptable to cheer for an English team in Europe than it is now. When Liverpool, Villa and Forest were winning European Cups, most neutrals were backing them to do so
