"As for England, well they will qualify easily, and there is no further debate on that. What does concern me, though, is the treatment of Liverpool players and in particular Daniel Sturridge.

For the life of me, I do not know how Daniel was let into a situation which ultimately ended with an injury which has deeply affect Liverpool. I've spoken to Daniel about this, and he told me that he did alert the England coaching team about his specific concerns about their training regime and how it might affect him.

Roy Hodgson obviously thought that it is the start of the season so he must work them a bit harder, and Daniel went along that training regime and then got injured.

Put Roy Keane in that position and Roy would have said 'no, I'm not doing it'. But Daniel was eager, and it affected Liverpool more than anyone. It has had an effect on his club, and that is simply not right.

Daniel told me he was desperate to play, but maybe he should just assert himself a little bit more.

Talking of exciting Liverpool forwards, I am a little bit concerned about recent stories that PSG are looking to buy Raheem Sterling.

Give me a break. Yes Paris is a great place and PSG are a great club, but would going to France really be good for the development of one of the most prodigious young talents on the planet? Of course not, as he is already thriving at Liverpool.

Agents are good businessmen who are looking after the best interests of their very wealthy young clients and will naturally consider all available options. In this case, though, they need to look at the long term and see that a quick buck now for Raheem would not be in the interests of player longevity. No offence PSG."

Ian Rush lamenting England's treatment of Daniel Sturridge in the Irish Independent. Will it ever stop? I'm enjoying the fact that Sterling is being linked with super-rich clubs around Europe, a pleasant distraction from the Mirror's freelance agency work in hawking whoever our top 6 players happen to be at the time of a transfer window.
That Sturridge/England training business: what was conspicuous by its absence was any comment on the matter from the player himself. Imagine not piping up yourself when all that was getting said about you.

Maybe the born-again divvy was told by Jesus not to say anything.

Sturridge seems like an okay lad, and knows piping up will put him in an awkward position no matter what he says. Liverpool and their merry band of ex-players in the media need to shut up if they can't resolve this behind closed doors, because they've put him in that awkward position and are now almost condescendingly wondering aloud why he won't stand up for himself . They really are unimaginable whoppers.

Sturridge has behaved like a nobhead, tbf. He told Hodgson nothing of the sort regarding not training as per the Liverpool coaching method. If he did, Hodgson is a liar and I dont believe he is. Sturridge has just allowed others like Rodgers and big nose there to come out with some cobblers about 'it's our understanding he told the England set up he wasn't to train blah blah blah', in order to make a song and dance about it and get special dispensation for him in the future.

That's a player with a very suspect character, imo. Hodgson's been let down by him.

You could be right but I'm not particularly convinced Sturridge is complicit in this nonsense. He's done the only thing he really could, which is stay quiet. Either he has ran back to Rodgers with some nightmare reports of England mismanagement, and is hoping Rodgers will bail him out of the setup altogether with some media pressure, or he and England are just the latest oblivious victims of Brendan Rodgers' blamehunt.

Are Liverpool not capable of contacting the England camp and making their concerns known?

There really is no depth they won't stoop to when it comes to deflecting blame.

The only person who comes out this in a bad light is Rodgers IMO. Hodgson was training his players as he saw fit, being the manager of England and all. Sturridge was doing what any good, committed player would and trained, being a pro footballer and all. Then Rodgers comes out with this '2 days off for pacey players' tripe, being a bellend and all.

I've never heard of any complaints from mangers of this nature before and Rodgers persisted in playing sterling, a pretty pacey player, for 120 minutes in a midweek game in between 2 weekend premier league games. This 2 day rule only applies to certain pacey players it seems.

The England manager said his relationship with Rodgers had not suffered but he is unhappy about the allegation that Sturridge was training against his wishes and should have been given a 48-hour recovery period when he suffered the injury on international duty in early September that has kept him out for nearly a month.

“I don’t remember that,” Hodgson said. “That’s dangerous, that one. I don’t remember that at all. That’s interesting. We will check that up with other members of staff. I don’t have any memory of Daniel telling me that he didn’t want to train.

“He never asked [to be given 48 hours]. I’ve never been asked to give 48 hours to any player. If I am under pressure to give each player two days off between games we won’t train at all. If every time we give two days off, we will be down to 20 days’ training in the course of the next year and a half. For me that is unacceptable. We need to work with the players.”

Hodgson added: “The interesting thing for the session where Daniel got injured is that he was quite keen to take part because he was such an important part of it, and we were trying to develop a new system of play. He was the forward who understood it best. He was more than happy to come in and help us to get our points over. I understand Brendan being unhappy. We are never happy when we send a player back injured, but we do our best.”

Hodgson and Rodgers spoke on Wednesday and the Liverpool manager now says he “does not think the same will happen again”. Yet Hodgson, facing questions about whether he had come out second-best in a club-versus-country dispute, clearly sees it a different way and he also responded to Rodgers publicly stating that Raheem Sterling should be rested from international duty.

“I need to win games, just as he does. I need my best players. He [Sterling] has played quite a lot but there must be six or seven who have played as many minutes. I do not expect managers to tell me whether players should be selected, no more than I would dream of telling them who to pick"

I would love Roy Hodgson to win something with England and be regarded as an all-time great. The way Liverpool slate him is a disgrace.

He was always on to a hiding to nothing with them, succeeding Benitez. It was quite similar to Moyes going to Man Utd, although Moyes inherited a better team than Hodgson did.

Think Rodgers was an idiot to expand the complaint to other players like Sterling and especially to players that weren't his like Welbeck. And for playing all this out in e full glare of the media instead of handling it quietly behind doors.

But given Sturridge's injury history I can understand why it might be necessary for him to have a slighly different training regime than some other players. Martinez himself has said he feels some players need a longer rest after games before training/playing than others.

It really is a disgrace that Roy Hodgson and England have amputated Daniel Sturridge's legs.

They did not have the permission of Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool FC to do this and questions must be asked as to why his legs needed to be removed at such short notice. The FA have form for crippling Liverpool players and this is just the latest case. If Liverpool are not careful England will remove Sterling's feet and make him run around with prosthetics.

I feel a petition and letter writing campaign coming on.
