I just think Mourinho doesn't fancy him in his team and told him he'd be down the pecking order, and the stuff we're hearing him say now is arse covering.

And the happy outcome you rightly point to is not happenstance - Lukaku demonstrated he could score against other top PL teams last season with WBA.

But surely if the idea was for him to score against CL contenders, you wouldn't send him to a team with even an OUTSIDE chance of making the top 4? Otherwise it defeats the entire object of the exercise. Surely you'd send him back to WBA, or somewhere similar?
