"We are not going to sell Luis. For all the top clubs it's extremely important [not to sell to a rival] but especially for Liverpool because we're not in Europe this year and have not been in the Champions League for a while. To sell to a rival for those positions, or one of them, would be ludicrous. Liverpool needs to be playing in Europe. It needs to be playing in the Champions League. That's what Liverpool football club is about.
"I'm unequivocal that we won't sell to Arsenal, whatever the bid is. I have not said it to Stan [Kroenke, Arsenal's majority shareholder] but I had a personal conversation with others at Arsenal and told him [Gazidis] we would not sell to Arsenal. He won't be sold even if a foreign club comes in because we do not have time to sign a suitable replacement. It's a football reason. It's not about finances. That's why at this point, so late in the window, with everyone who's already moved or isn't moving, we can't replace him. So for football reasons we can't sell, and especially to Arsenal."

Hard to see how any "negotiations at £40 million" clause is satisfied by that statement, if thats genuinely what they are up to. I doubt the "we dont have time to sign a replacement" theory would hold up either, given the window closes at the start of September and this has been dragging on for ages.

This could be a ploy to get Arsenal to pay 55 million, didn't they do the same with Torres before accepting a deal with Cheslea, the only different that had a replacement in place? which was Carroll? Seems that they have been rejected by strikers from all over Europe.

the mad thing is that they have - according to most of the hacks who report in football - have lined up an almost exact replacement for him, even right down to the player in question being a cheating bellend who has been accused of racism

diego costa, haha. Its seems that they know that they cant replace the quality if Suarez leaves and so they will force to keep their star even tho he spat on the club from a great height. Not sure of the outcome of this at all. The question is whether Suarez will sulk or roll his sleeves up and dig in for the shirt?
