Duncan Ferguson the coach

I've never understood how this fella was elevated to become a club legend. A kopite mate of mine once told us that they referred to him as Duncan the tampon.

In for a day, out for a month.

I swear I remember that song being sung on the coach to an away when I was about 14. “In for a week and out for a month, Duncan is a tampon”

He does appear to enjoy charmed existence on the Everton coaching staff, and, pursuant to this, the avuncular hand of Blue Bill definitely hovers in the background. I do not have any particular axe to grind with him - suffice to say he bleeds blue and is a talent at gurning...

Do other clubs have someone in a similar role though - it does seem a bit unusual? He's involved with the first team but that's 3 managerial/coaching teams he's been involved in that have come and gone and he's still there. Normally, managers bring in their coaching staff but Ferguson seems a permanent fixture. Obviously, the club employ coaches throughout the academy and youth teams but it is a bit odd that he's involved in the first team but without the accountability other first team coaches seem to have.
