Don't get me wrong mate, I love Distin, he's been a cracking player for us. I just think there's no way he can sustain the pace of the Premier League for as long as another two years.

Would be a good season to start bringing young Shane through.

If we want to avoid Duffy getting itchy feet and thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, it has to be the season we start bringing him through. I genuinely believe he's got the quality to walk into the starting XI's of a few lower PL teams already.

Or maybe we should take a lesson from Spurs with how they are raising Caulker? Loaned him to Swansea last year.

Yobo / Heitinga / Jagielka / Distin / Duffy

That's 5 centre backs -- obviously Yobo needs to go and we'll probably end up with 2 - 2.5mil for him.

I think Duffy would still be 4th choice, Distin has no sale value so I wouldnt mind seeing Jagielka off for 10mil ish and Duffy being backup for Distin/Heitinga....

Jagielka to go... thats a mad statement, jagielka 3 times the defender johnny is, had an awful euro's turn his back on the ball doesnt throw himself infront of it like jags... doesnt read the play like jags and probably hasn't got as much pace as jags either.....

jagielka will no doubt be our future captain, and is still our best defender.

Has a great deal of potential to become a quality centre-half for Everton, instant replacement for Distin when he decides to retire, could do with a loan out to another premier league side like Norwich or Wigan for six months though as we have three centre-halves that are near world-class in our squad right now.

I think Duffy will be Distin's replacement eventually, that said from his performances for the first team last year and from what i've seen in pre season i wouldn't mind seeing him start a few more games this season. He's strong, vocal, good ball header and has good tackling ability so i'm looking forwards to him being included.

i reckon he still has 2, he was great last year bar that mistake, but he was solid apart and was his best season for us IMO. however, reckon he'll be on the bench a lot this year so i suppose that may further his career longetivity.

agree with moyes showing cnfidence in duffy and not dropping him again if he doesnt actually make any mistakes. should be the same with all 4 as long as the mistakes aren't really frequent, which in that case would require stability.

I agree with a lot of this. Think he could be a player for us and seems that sort of defender who could chip in with a few goals over a season as well.

Put him out on loan for the year, like Spurs did with Caulker to Swansea, then next year he should be ready to step up.

Yep yep, good times in that possie... but we've always been blessed there it seems.

Question is, will Johnny be gone by the start of the season? Last season Jags didn't do the best and we're already losing Joey (even though we've not had him for ages anyway)

Duffy came in last season and performed like a PL player, so would prefer to see him in the team than an older player. Maybe not all season but at least half of the games.

The thing about Duffy is that he was willing to listen to the older lads and learn the game from them. That says a lot about him and where he's going in the game. Moyes will love that.

He's also a beast in the air and should really have scored a couple with free headers or where he outjumped people in a few of the games he started. He looked like he belonged when he played and I thought he should have stayed in until he had a bad game.

He needs to work on his distribution a little bit and he's not the quickest but I think he's set for a good career at this level, hopefully with us. Him and Johnny are ideal together IMO.

With Dizzer once his pace goes he'll be finished completely. His positioning is poor and he uses his pace a lot to cover his mistakes. By all accounts he's a top trainer and is in brilliant condish so we may get another two seasons out of him. At this point I'd put him as maybe the quickest CB in the league, which says a lot considering he's 94.

For me if Shane gets 10-15 starts over the course of this season it will be a good season for him and will put him in a position to stake a claim for a proper start from the season after. If Moyes doesn't see him getting them games it's better he goes out on loan for them. Whether another prem side would take a player like Shane on loan and give him games is the question?

I don't want to see him drop to Championship level after proving he can cut it in the prem.

With the deepest respect to Gary Caldwell, Shane Duffy could walk into that Wigan defence at CB. I fully agree he shouldn't drop to the Championship, though. Not many players had respectable games v Spurs away last season, but Duffy came out of it with a lot of credit from me. That's the performance which told me the lad is PL quality.
