Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

Yea, I think a merit based immigration system is unAmerican. Flies in the face of ‘the land of opportunity’

I don't see why. We'd still be taking in asylum seekers and the like. Again, do you think it was unAmerican when proposed by JFK/LBJ?

It's just crazy to me to see people indicating the concept of America looking out for America's interests is somehow somehow a great slight to the rest of the world. A lot of the people bemoaning such things want us to keep our nose out of everyone's business when it suits them, which I find interesting.

Oversimplification of a huge contingent of people isn't productive. Given the appropriate scorn you and others have shown toward demonization of Mexicans, I would think that should be apparent.

The wall is being built to control access to the US by our southern border. Trump has sold that as a means to stop crime, drugs, rape, etc. He's also sold it as a means to preserve the powers given to Congress and the Executive, to preserve America's sovereignty, to preserve America's resources and to benefit the state and local governments saddled by the costs of illegal immigration.

The wall is a tool. You're welcome to feel that it's some symbol of the demonization of Mexicans. If your argument is that the wall, and supporting the wall, is inherent demonization of Mexicans, I find that rather childish.

No he sold it by calling Mexicans rapists etc. He demonized Mexican people at every turn during the campaign. His supporters lapped it up and chanted 'build the wall'.

Regardless, I simply can't fathom how a fiscal conservative could even possibly justify an $18 billion spend on something that would be a completely ineffective waste of money which would also only sour relations with our allies from the south.

Demonizing the largest immigrant segment of our population could very well lead to radicalized behavior. It's a terrible statement to do so and this president has pulled no punches in making Mexican immigrants appear to be an evil in this country.

.
I think the H1b system works well for a merit visa system, I don’t see the need to end the lottery visa system. I don’t know what jfk/lbj proposed, if it was the abolition of the lottery visa system, then yea, I’d think that was unAmerican.

It works but not well. A friend of mine is an immigration attorney in the Bay Area whose primary client is Google. She has to jump through hoops to get these folks in at a massive cost. The only thing I will agree with Trump and his supporters is that immigration in this country is f'd up.

For me we should be making it far easier...especially for those filling the void left from our education system.

Maybe if we invested $30k for 600k odd people in Ohio or PA on engineering education maybe we'd do better filling that void while also lifting those white voters from those same states that are at virtually no risk from Mexican Nationals but fear and hate them anyway.

Any idea of the cost per year of illegal immigration to the US ?

If more than the cost of a wall then they may consider it justified.

Wait, what? Trump has been quoted specifically (and inaccurately) as demonizing Mexicans by calling the majority of them "drug dealers" and you said of his quote that it was "particularly accurate." This drug-dealer ascription is exactly the definition of demonization--to label a group as wicked and threatening. But now you are suggesting that if others find your support of Trump and his idiotic wall to be a "demonization of Mexicans," that we are "childish."

Okay...I guess we are childish??

As always, I'm puzzled by your reasoning, but then again you are someone who uses as a personal metric of self-honesty the ability to unabashedly proclaim "Haiti is a shithole," and can say without a hint of sarcasm that the USA has universal health care because poor people can walk into any emergency room/walk-in clinics, get treatment, and not go to jail if they can't pay their bills.

So I guess I'm not surprised.

It is not clear what the cost is...my guess is that if you add up all the plus/minuses that it it is around 0 (though there will differences in gains/losses at different levels of government--towns, counties, states, federal). But certainly not a loss of 18 billion.

See informative link here.

Serious question to anyone supporting Trump - should his comments on women not automatically rule him out of being president? Never mind everything else...
