Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

$18 billion for a wall we've never needed.

Personally I think that money could be far better used on things like health care and infrastructure to name a couple.

But obviously, as Trump directly said (and apparently some people buy into this), the majority of Mexicans coming into this country are "drug-dealers." And while this is completely false, I guess under Trump's racist logic a wall is necessary.

Baffling:
1) Invent fictitious problem which dehumanizes an entire country on our southern border.
2) Get your unthinking support base to buy into this idiotic falsehood rather than maybe have an actual discussion of the pros/cons of illegal Mexican immigration.
3) Then claim you need 18 billion dollars to fix this non-existent drug-dealer problem.

Why don't we need the wall? I tend to think border security is a genuine policy item to tackle, I just don't think it's a top 2-3 priority like Trump does. I do think that the argument that securing the border must be done in conjunction with a DACA deal is a strong one.

Since the request is now that the American taxpayer fund the wall, the better or more appropriate question to ask is, why do we need a wall and is it the best approach?

Securing the border and funding the wall are not the same thing. The border can be better secured without a wall. DACA is being tied to "the wall", not border security.

1. We have managed without a border wall for a little while now. I think there is plenty of evidence to suggest so.

2. Why spend so much money on something that can EASILY be breached by a boat or a plane or a ladder or etc, etc, etc.

3. It sends a terrible message to our a friends (yes we are friends with Mexico and have been for a long time) to the south. Effectively ruining a relationship in our back yard that could have terrible consequences down the road.

These a just a few reasons off the top of my head. I have no idea why a DACA deal and a costly and frankly stupid wall need to be joined.

A wall isn’t going to stop illicit drug smuggling or prevent undesirables from getting into the country. You can better achieve that by not spending the money on a wall but rather better technology and beefed up border security. You would also do that by working with the Mexicans rather than insulting them all like Trump did.

Not very smart from a stable genius

Want to significantly stifle illegal immigration? Slap incredibly severe punishment on those who employ folks who are in the US illegally.

Not going to happen tho. It is much easier and politically effective to gripe about the supply side than the demand.

My implication wasn't that a wall was necessary, hence the different terminology used. I was asking the poster to clarify his thoughts on "the wall."

We've managed in the sense that we've had little control over our southern border and haven't fallen victim to some grand terror attack or something, I suppose.

Breaches by plan or boat or the like are probably a very small percentage of the flow we have now. So that there would still be ways to thwart our effort isn't a great argument, in my view.

Our relationship with Mexico is already complicated and strained. I don't think a border wall considerably worsens it. I especially don't think it makes much difference vs. some different border control efforts that don't involve a wall.

I think it's possible there is a better solution than the wall. But "working with the Mexicans" acts like Mexico has any real interest in helping us on this issue - they do not. This isn't something that started under Trump obviously, and Mexico wasn't exactly pulling out the stops to stop the flow of illegal immigration under Obama.

This, along with border security measures like a wall, are viable potential solutions. I agree.
