Idk how many people here have any personal connections when it comes to Katrina but it seems like this admin is hellbent on topping Bush when it comes to callousness/incompetence
During Katrina the major issue in response was FEMA's incompetence, tbf this time they seem to be doing a reasonable job given the constraints (3rd hurricane in short period of time so stretched and no time to have learnt any lessons from previous two, distance to Puerto Rico etc) of delivering aid to the island itself in terms of getting it to ports/airports. The breakdown appears to be getting aid around the island itself and what looks like a complete lack of understanding about how frail the infrastructure was, and how vulnerable a population it is, even prior to the hurricane let alone after.
I'm surprised by the comparative lack of the military preparations, not from Trump for whom even his supporters wouldn't say planning is a strong suit, but from Kelly et el. For instance prior to Irma landing in Florida the aircraft carrier Lincoln and some support vessels were sent to ensure that air relief could be provided if required

Yet post Irma they headed home despite Maria's forecast track being dire and it was over a week after that hurricane had hit for a senior general to be sent to assess the situation/coordinate response on Puerto Rico or for the hospital ship Comfort to leave port despite the vast majority of the islands hospital facilities (and USVI's) being severely degraded, it will take further 5 days before they arrive to help.
Of course Trump seems to have been tone deaf throughout the whole thing, if his focus had been on it rather the NFL it could well have provided a much needed direction for his staff.
