America seems to be tearing itself apart. Lots of people, just ordinary folk in the main, on both sides of the political divide really need to have a good look at themselves or it will never heal......

Slavery was the major reason for the civil war and a lot of the statues were raised in the Jim Crow era - how the hell would they not be associated with suppression?I was thinking more about the way pro tump and anti trump people are behaving, not the above which is an abomination.Ever since his election there has been almost a forced resistance with trump then pushing even further than before. I was reading about the tearing down of confederate statues, which are now being seen as an symbol of suppression, and was immediately struck with the thought that there seems to be a raising of intolerance and even bigotry against past political or military figures and that this is now being utilised for the political battles of today. Should we in the U.K. destroy statues of King Charles or Cromwell. America has only really a short written history as the original Americans tended not to ensure its conservation, or it has been wilfully abandoned by past and present new Americans. I think elements of the left and the right and the white and the black are moving into positions of intolerance that may never be healed.......just a view.......
Now up to 4 resignations...
I'm down with the Cromwell idea!!Should we in the U.K. destroy statues of King Charles or Cromwell.

Fwiw General Lee himself felt there should not be statues "I think it wiser not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavoured to obliterate the marks of civil strife and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered.”
Pete, there were actual out of town Nazi's and KKK marching to protest the decision that local people had made to remove those monuments - you can't claim that the racial connotations of those statues are just some inconvenient detail.
Sorry, I'm not referring to these nutters at all, just the underlying intolerance that seems to be coming through since trump won the election. You can read it in this thread, long before the recent troubles.
Now I know I'm on dodgy ground here and you will know this better than I, but I thought the reason that there was a civil war was because the South decided to break away from the North and that the North wanted to preserve the union. The south may well have decided to do this because of slavery, but to suggest that the civil war was fought because of slavery is a big jump. It was, I believe, because the North wanted to sustain the status quo.....no ?
The statues have always been seen as a symbol of suppression by a large section of society, now that section has a voice and is democratically using it. You can conserve certain aspects of history in museums where the public can choose to consume it, rather than in public parks and municipal buildings where the public don't have a choice and their tax dollars pay for the upkeep.

Lincoln abolished slavery and the South seceded because of it.
