This guy says Trump would have earned more money had he just invested in the stock market. Trump is on record as saying you have to enjoy your career. He would not have been able to enjoy just sitting back earning a few percent per year from a fund invested in the stock market. It would be as unnatural as asking Lionel Messi to enjoy a profitable & fulfilling life as a bricklayer.

Trump cannot be compared to most other businessmen. He can only be compared to other businessmen in the real estate market, primarily businessmen in the NY real estate market where he was largely based. I don't think Trump is an especially brilliant businessman, but I do think he's more than competent. He's excellent at marketing(which is a large part of his business). He's a huge improvement on his near, and most famous NY real estate contemporary, Robert Durst.
