I really dont understand what makes people support and defend this man.

I just dont understand what makes people think "Yeah, this fella is a Saint, all these nasty people are just out to get him", how can that be the outcome you reach? All you need to do is spend 10 minutes watching the things hes said, the things hes wrote.

How can you be so devoid of decency that you go to bat for a man like this?

Is it an IQ thing? A morality thing?

I am not a Saint, I hold views others wont agree on, but can somebody explain to me the cult of Trump? Is it all just chemtrails and pizzagate?
People have been ripe for a guy like Trump since the beginning of the far right news explosion, beginning in the early 90s with Rush Limbaugh which begat the Newt Gingrich's of the world which begat Fox News. These people love to play the victim in everything.

Then we had the audacity to have a black president for 2 terms. And then social media and fake news really took off

These people simply want to "own the Libs" because it gives them a sense of belonging. The "otherization" of Libs/LBGTQ/migrants etc etc began in the right wing media landscape, giving rise to someone like Trump. And Libs, to these people, is anyone that's not full on MAGA.

These people don't think anything bad will happen to them because they are "on Trump's team". And they don't care what happens to other people. In fact, they don't even care if their lives and directly made better, only that other peoples' lives are made worse.

I'm generalizing here, but this is essentially what has happened from the time of the early 90s to now

I think the last 30 years has seen the perfect storm of ingredients to land us where we are.

The first was the cancelling of the fairness doctrine. This lead to the likes of Beck and Limbaugh in the 90's.
Politicians saw the power of outrage and the likes of Newt Gingrich started capitalizing on it.
I think, before that, many Americans would have switched back and forth between parties depending on the candidate. Not so much after.
Both sides became intrenched.

9/11 poured gasoline on already dangerous fires of patriotism and reckless wars drove an even deeper divide with more and more outrageous rhetoric being used to prolong the wars and fund the industrial military complex. War is big money and power.
By this time the conservatives have realized that the supreme court is where the real power lies and step up long term plans for that.

We elected a black President

Then there was Citizens United which pretty much took the limit off political spending.
By now, the likes of Roger Ales and Rupert Murdock are making tens of millions in the realm of sensationalist outrageous news.
Spectrum media weren't far behind and right wing talk radio boomed with everyone wanting a slice of the advertising dollar.
Around this time, anyone could join in and start a youtube channel or podcast.
The more obscene and outrageous, the more clicks.

In the meantime, without citizens united, any candidate could be bought by big business who despised the profit cutting regulations and corporate taxes of the left so more and more money was pumped in to the right as movements like the Tea Party gained huge financial and political support.

One of the main focus point of all the outrage was Obama. Campaigns and movements seeded in racism grew roots and grew rapidly.
A generation who'd grown up without the fairness doctrine and being primed by the right to think that extremist views were/are acceptable and even encouraged. Money flowed through groups like the NRA, christian mega churches and even the country music industry, all sending the same message.
All painting an extreme nationalist view of America.

Trump saw this audience as an easy mark and the once Democrat went about hijacking the republican party which was clearly beginning to lose control of it's messaging.
A generation resenting the way their life had changed (tho in most cases it hadn't really) were now free to blame anyone different to them for anything they didn't completely agree with. Immigrants, blacks, gays, students, liberals, all fair game. The internet acted like oxygen to a fire and people who, a generation ago, kept their racist xenophobic feelings in check now had the freedom to express themselves, tho most still hide behind names like 'catturd'.

We now have a huge problem where half the country have been conditioned to find Trumps behaviour acceptable while groups like the heritage foundation have been chipping away at the supreme court to make the rot harder and harder to stop.

And all the Democrats bring is empty platitudes.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk :)
Lol I just came back from a meeting and fired off my post before reading this.

But yes, essentially this

The notion that the special counsel statute is unconstitutional is an extreme minority view. That's one of those things where Thomas is off on an island. I wouldn't expect that ruling to survive appeal, and I also wouldn't expect even Alito to grant cert to strike that down again. A lot of the Republican justices, Alito included, are former US prosecutors.

Citing a concurrence by a single Supreme Court justice as the main justification for a decision is extremely sloppy law. L1s know not to do that. There's a reason the Eleventh Circuit keeps kicking her around.

Not surprised it is Vance. Vance is as phony and narcissistic as Trump. This passage from "White Rural Rage" is quite telling:

That is a striking lack of self-awareness. I don't think any of us should have been surprised by Trump picking a phony, after Pence. The difference you're describing is that Vance lacks any moral scruples or political red lines. Pence, at the end of the day, at least stood in favor of the rule of law and peaceful transitions of government.

Someone who will do legal work for the folks responsible for their parent's own addiction is not someone who asks hard questions.

Also, reports suggest Trump's VP pick is Vance. Burgum and Rubio are out, per multiple sources on both. Trump will make it official in less than two hours.
Vance is one creepy scumbag.
Read Hillbilly Elegy back in the day, guess I got taken in by the hype and was looking for any glimmer of light.
He's the perfect yes man for Trump.
