Ok so let's see if there are any gun nuts online: an elevated position with a clear line of sight, distance of about 130 metres, seemingly just clipping the target's right ear - should the shooter have done better?

While I feel uncomfortable answering this as I'm glad he has missed, I'd expect most British service personal, with an A2/A3, would be hitting the central mass.

We do have to be mindful that it isn't as simple as being on a range with clear, relaxed shots, as you have to factor in lack of time, pressure, wind etc.

Plus, an AR-style weapon probably wasn't the best choice, but yes... a person who is competent with a rifle should probably be getting one in the body.
