It will be very interesting to see how Trump responds. Steve Scalise had a much closer brush with the Grim Reaper, and religiously votes for gun control now. No one begrudges him it.

If Trump came out in favor of some gun control, would his base follow, or would they revolt? I don't think anyone knows the answer.

The shooter apparently used one building amongst many buildings, at an open air event, a large distance away from where the stage and from reports he accessed it just before he started shooting.

To prevent that in the way the speculation claims would require multiple cops or agents at every one of those buildings prior to and during the event, just doing that (ie not watching the crowd or responding to requests). That is potentially an awful lot of cops, probably many more than were available.

I’d say that an attempt like this is almost unstoppable at open air events in built up areas; the guy is always going to get a few seconds before the counter-sniper teams get him.
