It is mental the lengths people will go to to defend this absolute piss-pheasant. Like some sort of mass delusion.
For a lot of these authoriarian types, I'm sure the idea of being de jure above the law (rather than just insulated by wealth) is one of the big draws to amassing power in the first place. Rules are for other, littler people.
Some other “incredible people from history” arrested were Hitler, Stalin and a lot of mob bosses that tend to outnumber the MLK, Mandela etc
