Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

It does though. Hard to have meetings with African Americans who actually have a say in the administration when you don't appoint any.

Any? Ben Carson? (awaits derisive laughter)

re: your chart

Part of the construction of the narrative is selling the notion that the most important aspect of any group is how it looks (to those who craft the narrative) and how it checks off the required identity group requirements. We will hear a great deal about this over the next few weeks, without a doubt. These factors make it easy to fit more news reports into preexisting belief templates and fill time in a pleasant manner for those who spend lots of time at sources opposed to the new administration. It also provides data confirming the belief that we were a better nation when Obama was president. Here comes the Geico ad now.

@ilikecheese

Another good non-partisan article on the uphill battle the Dems face. There are some silver linings:

thanks for the links

it's pretty bad, but the republicans were even worse off in 2008. it would be nice if this makes Democrats take local and state elections more seriously, and inspires their voters to actually turn out for more than just executive-level messiahs, but i wouldn't count on it. and state houses and congressional districts have been rendered more democracy-proof since then.

on the other hand, if the Republicans are actually crazy enough to take away 20 million people's healthcare, who knows. it seemed certain even weeks ago, but there's now dissension in the ranks, especially in Ohio and Michigan, which were so important in the first place. they're starting to realize that if you break it, you own it.

they should pass something toothless, with a classic Republican-style name, like the "Destroying Obamacare Utterly, Comprehensively, a Hundred percent, Eternally" Act (D.O.U.C.H.E), which makes only cosmetic changes and actually repeals nothing, so they can claim to have upheld their promise.

i bet the Dems would go for it!

a preoccupation with 'optics' is one of the left's more frivolous and annoying habits. some of us are well aware (skip to 51:00):

of course, in the rare instances when they can play too, the right enjoys the game just as much, if not more so:

on the other hand, it's hard for people who try to be self-aware, and honest with themselves, and to avoid ideological blinkers, to believe that while police everywhere are demonstrably capable of shooting unarmed civilians over parking tickets, none of them, none whatsoever, are simultaneously capable of being more prone to brutality when they encounter black people, because racism ended in 1965.

especially when there are so many stories like this, for example

or do the police do this to you too whenever you see them, @mezzrow?

edited to say - right, not meant for here

How many of you were laughing at the republican collective meltdown after Obama was first elected? Just curious.

To be honest I was too busy watching the actual celebrations in the streets in my neighborhood.

At the time I lived in Oakland, CA, which is one of the most diverse cities in this country...if not the most. Too lazy to look it up.

Anyway, people literally took to the streets celebrating the victory. Blacks, Latinos, Whites, Asians....all together celebrating on the corner of Grand and Lake Park in front of the Grand Lake Theater. It really was an amazing night.

Good article.

A few quotes though like this one:

"And he’s opining on subjects that he knows very little about from national security to healthcare policy and others." That was Obama in a nutshell. Thought he was the smartest man in the room on everything. Did he get called out on it by the media? Not even close.

This one was nailed on:

"He’s a profoundly anti-institutional person, and I think that’s part of his great appeal to voters. Voters right now are sick of institutions, and he’s got no problem railing against them." I wholeheartedly agree with that.

I was at a private business club in Washington and joined in the celebrations with other business folk drinking on the balcony and watching fireworks. There was an amazing feeling that this guy was going to be a great President......Disappointment followed......
