In answer to the question of why people are so afraid of Trump... Are other politicians any better? I really like this reply by a friend of a friend of mine:
"They're afraid of him legitimising racism. They're afraid of him denying climate change and implementing policies that will lead to the deaths of millions. They're afraid of him legitimising abusing, assaulting and demeaning women. They're afraid of him giving a green light to all those who'd rather dumb opinions down than debate them. They're afraid of a leader who'd rather attack science than understand it, of one who'd rather build walls than knock them down. They're afraid of his inability to take criticism, his childishness, his ego, his tendency toward impulsive rashness and what that means for someone with control of the world's biggest nuclear arsenal. They're afraid of the gleeful triumphalism that his victory has triggered among far-right groups and autocratic regimes around the world. They're afraid of his mockery of learning. And yes, other politicians are better. Being a president is like being a parent; everyone is flawed and [Poor language removed] up, but the job description involves being a role model. He's no role model I'd want my kids to follow. Or grow up in a world surrounded by followers of his ethos. If some fame- or politics-empowered arsehole grabbed my daughter's [Poor language removed] without her consent, I'd want them prosecuted, not elected. I don't like Clinton or much of what she stands for, and she should never have been the democratic nominee, but she at least (in public) espouses some positive values. You know all this... And if you don't, go and listen to Trump's speeches again and ask yourself: is this the best representative of what we want western democracy to be? He scares me. But not half as much as what he may have unleashed."
