"Tolerance" and the modern college (university) campus

Previously put some of this in the San Bernardino thread, but it's an entirely separate topic. Seems that "political correctness," "tolerance," "trigger warnings," "micro aggressions," and an entire spate of new and newly redefined words have recently overwhelmed the culture of campuses. Jonathan Haidt describes this as the "Yale Problem," but it seems to be affecting Western universities quite broadly.

TL;DR, "ideas" and "conversation" are being sacrificed at the altars of "tolerance" and "correctness".

Thoughts?

Have you swallowed a thesaurus lad

Good job they were not students in the 80's.

What a great time to be a student. Something to debate and protest about every week, normally involving someone who's name began with M......

Mugabe ?.......but you are right though, in the 70's and 80's students did stand up and protest, they appear to be very shallow today by comparison.....

It's the same in UK, but they're slapped down better by the looks of it. For example, Cecil Rhodes: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...er-alumni-threatens-to-withdraw-millions.html

If you scroll to the bottom of that page, 92% of people were for keeping the statue in place, as whether distasteful or not by 2016 standards, he and what he did is a part of history.

There's an apparent liberal core need to be offended by everything and anything, and it's diluting the chance of being listened to on issues where a battle should be fought, as it comes across as "oh no, they're off on one again" - and this is compounded by the young taking easy targets on instead of bigger societal issues.

You're not allowed to be offended by someone who called black people the "subject race" and denied them basic human rights? I do agree that some "liberals" are just pathetic and offended by everything, but what Hitler did was a part of history. Surely you'd agree a Hitler statue would be unacceptable.

Never understood this Rhodes statute thing. Surely if you're a black person attending that college, wouldn't you want to be able to stand in front of that statue and say 'look at me ya big racist, here I am, a black person attending this college, go me!'. By taking it away, you're just eliminating any reminder to stand up to prejudices.

Be careful mate, sounds like you're speaking for all black people and telling them what they should think there.

Hello Godwin's Law, glad you popped in, didn't take you long.

Ha, nice try.

Here's a good test.

Replace "political correctness" with "respecting people who are different than me"

Is there overreach on college campuses? Sure.

Is it still an issue? Yep.

Do you feel that Gandhi should be written out of history too? He had some pretty strong views on the Black population on a South Africa.
