"Tolerance" and the modern college (university) campus

Do you feel that Gandhi should be written out of history too? He had some pretty strong views on the Black population on a South Africa.

I'm not saying Rhodes should be written out of history. Written out of history and honoured with a statue are two different things. Also, Ghandi was a whopper.

The statue in Oxford has a right to be there, if students don't like it there's nothing stopping them going elsewhere. If a delegation from Dresden demanded the bomber command memorial pulled down should we accommodate them?

Completely different thing.

I identify with the left, but this mindset is holding us back. I don't understand why the left feel that they have to use underhand tactics when discussing their ideas. It goes to a base level, where the Tories are 'evil'. I just don't get it, clearly Cameron doesn't just hate everyone, he just has, in my opinion, incorrect theories about how to improve the state of our country. So if we are to debate it, then we must know the facts and structure a debate!

At Uni, there is a fair bit of hate towards feminists. I didn't understand at first, but now I realise that whilst I completely agree with their points most of the time, its the way they go about their points which drives everyone mad. Debate the ethics of abortion, don't lobby for a pro-life activist's speech to be cancelled. It drives people to his side. Hear him out, and then if you are so sure you are correct on the matter (and I am), prove his logic incorrect afterwards.

Well said! I despise the left because of the points you mention, there is no debate just an attempt to shout down opposing views with words that end with "ism" or "phobe".
If they could respond to a point of view with "You're wrong and this is why" then we might all get somewhere.

Read that Atlantic article a while back and tthought it was well done. Also think there was a similar thread on here before (not playing thread police), think i posted this vid in that thread but will do so again. @Jags made a good point with way people go about things overshadowing and sometimes even hurting the cause they're promoting.

Previously put some of this in the San Bernardino thread, but it's an entirely separate topic. Seems that "political correctness," "tolerance," "trigger warnings," "micro aggressions," and an entire spate of new and newly redefined words have recently overwhelmed the culture of campuses. Jonathan Haidt describes this as the "Yale Problem," but it seems to be affecting Western universities quite broadly.

TL;DR, "ideas" and "conversation" are being sacrificed at the altars of "tolerance" and "correctness".

Thoughts?

She's scary and hot or hot and scary. I'm not sure which.
Neel is very clever with what he writes. Thoroughly enjoy it as thought provoking and edgy yet funny

Top skills from the Harvard academics there, smashing it back on the volley with a bit of Latin etymology. Nice.
