Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

Pretend for a minute all those systems were still in place and this happens.

Now imagine for a minute that in January/February we'd have gone "right, lock down, close the borders, furlough everyone for six months, keep the R down".

And then imagine if this "did a SARS", 10 people died and we'd sank the economy into a historically massive depression on a false alarm.

How many times do you think we'd do that before people would go "no, let's see how this goes".

It's not like a tornado siren that inconveniences people for an hour or so if it's a false alarm; once you trigger a pandemic protocol it basically obliterates the country for months.

That's basically what happened here - people underestimated it due to false dawns. No matter what, the pandemic would have taken hold across the world. Culturally the west would still have been unprepared for this, no matter what plans Obama had in place. Issues like PPE, testing capacity, ICU preparedness and so on is where improvements could and should have been made, but ultimately this pandemic would have gone by and large on the same broad trajectory regardless.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - it's so easy to gloss over context.
You’re probably right about most of this. 80k people have died, and it’s still such a localized thing that people are protesting the lockdowns. Some of the protesting, particularly guys walking around with assault weapons, is just people being stupid because they can. However, for a lot of people, this is still just a faraway crisis that is being handled in a way that has ruined them financially. We’re over two months into this, and I still don’t have even secondhand knowledge of anyone who has definitely had the virus, much less died from it.

So there’s no doubt it would have been a tough/impossible sell back in February. The only issue I’ll take with the bolded part is that IF we had gone into lockdown back in mid-February when there were <50k cases worldwide, we probably are able to keep a lid on things by closing up shop for 3-4 weeks. Not 6 months like you mentioned, and what some places may end up doing now. That’s why having all those warning systems in place is so critical.

My point though is that if you put measures in early for every pandemic alert, and most of them turn out to be duds, then public and political fatigue sets in and there will be an inevitable reluctance to act.

That's what happened with this. We had years of being told SARS, H1N1 (QUICK, STOCK TAMIFLU EVERYONE, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!), MERS etc. etc. etc. and everyone just grew complacent. If this happens again, you'll see several years of vigilance and periodic precautionary lockdowns, but ultimately the same false sense of calm will set in.

So that's why I'm saying prevention is better than the cure - stop it at the root so that if one comes about again it should be a total fluke naturally caused pandemic rather than one aided and abetted by a negligent nation state.

I also don't get how China receive a free pass, those politicians did not need an outbreak to show they are terrible human beings, indeed they are, but this outbreak is all on China. We will get another one when 2030/35 comes around. Trump and BJ won't be around then.

Absolutely no one is saying prevention ISN'T better though. It's just not the primary concern right now. Particularly when there's an ongoing bungling of the response.
Agreed. One of the guys on Pod Save America also mentioned the other day that ****ing all over China right now might not be the wisest move when they’ll almost certainly play a MASSIVE role in manufacturing and distributing the vaccine once it’s finally available.

Because no one in power in the West wants to acknowledge what they have been getting up to, or more specifically what we’ve deliberately turned a blind eye to down the years.

Reminder: This is the Trump thread. Love it or leave it, rubes.

Congratulations to @Tubey for clogging the thread up with page after page of China bashing and responses thereto, and thus, by deflecting focus, acting as the thread's surrogate Trump. Best wishes for your convalescence and please never visit the USA.

To translate: "Please let me continue to yell in my echo chamber."

Yeah but I mean come on, what would any of them know? It's not like they worked in a somewhat functional administration, or that said administration had any experience of pandemics.

Except one politician actually has taken action against China and was prepared to suffer the political damage from a trade war from doing so. Yet like so many other things he does all I hear from the UK media is - Trump is starting a tradewar that will damage us. Trump is laughably closing borders against WHO advice. Trump is defunding the WHO and putting us at risk... Trump isn't building alliances. Yet maybe he's fed up with the weakness of the G20 in taking action on this. Where's the balance? If taking action against China only results in criticism how will we get other countries to do likewise? They will be bullied by China one by one and pulled into line.

Don't we need a balance to support brave action against China like Australia has at least started if we are going to take action collectively? We can't be singing from different hymn sheets if we all recognise China is a pariah that has caused enormous damage and remains a threat to do it again and worse in the future.
