They don’t need a reason. It’s law. Simple.
While I've read your further posts and I appreciate (understand) your own personal stance, I can't help but feel that this rather common response is... well... glib.
I've said previously said it multiple times, mainly in the mass-shooting thread, but I do not believe that you should always do something simply because you can.
Carrying semi-automatic, high capacity firearms into a capitol building is reckless, and I can only suspect that they did so to intimidate other members of the public.
Why else would they do it? Even if they're trying to display their
rights, I'm sure they could have chose more sensible or less hostile examples.

@riddick rightly mentioned, I suspect that there are a fair few parts of the almost sacred constitution that the population are less likely to zealously defend.
I've seen examples where people walk past schools with rifles on their back (in open carry states) and look to attract the interest of the police, mainly to find faults.
Can people not see that this is wrong, antagonistic and more likely to lead to an unnecessary confrontation? The same can be said to how these protesters act.
I really don't understand the whole American culture of firearms, but each to their own; however, even within the current laws the culture needs totally changing.
There's many other countries in the world where firearms laws are available to the majority of the population, but the US is well ahead with how their misused.
To put it another way, I strongly believe in parts of the UK justice system, but I wouldn't maintain a blanket approach to this - if bits need changing, then change it.
The US constitution with its amendments - errr, so it can be changed - shouldn't be rigidly followed as if it's own dogma if bits morally should be revised.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand... Trump is an idiot!
