Not necessarily. Things might not have spiraled far so out of control if our president had treated it with the seriousness it deserved from the moment he became aware of it. Instead, Trump spent a month calling it a hoax and playing golf.

I’m honestly at least a little surprised Trump hasn’t just flat out resigned from office. I’m sure when he decided to run for President he pictured it as an opportunity to stroke his ego by holding rallies and use the power of the presidency to enrich himself and his rich friends. This is very much NOT what he signed up for, and I can’t decide whether he deserves some sort of bizarre praise for persevering, or even more criticism for not stepping aside and letting the adults in the room try and dig us out of this mess.

Almost certainly it’s never happened. But Trump is cut from a little bit of a different cloth, in the sense that I see him less craving of power than he is of adulation. Granted, it’s not like his base is going to desert him through all this, but he’s still missing out on holding his rallies and some of the other stuff that was so important for his ego.

Well for one thing he needs to win re-election to get himself past the statute of limitations on several crimes he risks being indicted for on leaving office
