my understanding is that the default is publicly recorded votes but that the Senate could choose to use secret ballot.

What is the precedent for a secret ballot? Do they hold a vote and does a simple majority decide it, or is it up to the senate majority leader to decide? If so, then we all know the outcome. I don't know if Mitch McConnell is too gutless to stand up to Trump or what. I mean, Trump could bang his wife in the most nastiest way possible, film it, put it on his twitter account and I'm sure Mitch would STILL back him!
Mate, at this point no-one is surprised at the complete and utter buffoonery that this clown comes out with. But if you can't see a problem with a man in his 70's, who is president of the US (and as such has a certain standard that most people expect him to live up to), photoshopping his head on Rocky (which is something that you would see from an emotionally undeveloped teenager), then there is really no point in trying to explain to you why so many people have an issue with ol' Donny boy.

There is no precedent for it in impeachment proceedings, but McConnell could call for it, theoretically I believe.
McConnell not standing up to Trump isn't about being gutless... McConnell's sole animating principle (LITERALLY) is the accumulation and holding onto of power... and Trump is his current way to do that. He's the most cynical man in politics, definitely in the US, possibly worldwide.
He'd cut Trump loose in a millisecond if he thought it would increase Republicans' chances of holding onto the Senate, but his calculation currently is that Trump on the ballot is the best way to do that.
