In some states you have to register "Democrat" or "Republican" in order to vote in the respective primary--known as a "closed" primary; other states have open primaries where one doesn't have to claim allegiance/affiliation to any party. That may contribute to the public declarations.
In some states it is required in order to vote in party primaries. It's not a requirement by the Federal government.
It would be embarrassing if it weren't for the fact that livelihoods are at stake...it's just plain tragico-dumb.
Nope. you can be republican, Democrat or unaffiliated (me).if you are unaffiliated, you can vote in either party’s primaries but not both ( this changes state to state). You can vote for anyone in the general election.

Please don't get bogged down with the us v them mentality. By doing that you play into the hands off those trying to manipulate and destabilize US politics
