Indeed the plight of the working class or income/wealth inequality is a bigger travesty. Yet that is not really a reason to have Congress ignore its duty with regard to impeachable acts by the Executive.

Given his success last time, and GOP leaders only muttering vague disapproval, I don’t think he is crazy to try the same approach - it could well work

You are right that he is trying the same thing, but there are massive differences here that will sink him.
For a start, he is the President, and secondly he tried to keep the Zelensky thing quiet at the start. If he now openly starts saying these things as he was today, it completely legitimizes that whistleblower complaint, destroys any sane attempt to defend him and most importantly it removes any justification for keeping secret what is in that server. The House will be able to take a look at the relevant bits of it because Trump has basically told them what is in there.
The more he opens his mouth, the greater the chance that the GOP in the Senate will not back him.
Hope you are right but youhave more faith than me, just think they will move the goalposts of what they say is impeachable conduct.

Indeed, though there is a greater than 75% chance that they will define an offence like that and then discover incontrovertible proof that Trump has committed it.
I just don't see how, based on the past two weeks, that anyone over that side could have any confidence that (a) this is as bad as it will get or (b) that Trump won't sacrifice anything and anyone before he gives it up. Nor do I see what they actually gain from keeping him around - despite his insistence, it isn't as if the GOP was on its last legs before he came along.

I don't know how anyone can really be surprised. We are living in a post truth era. Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, and all right wing media have been selling agenda driven lies for decades.
We are seeing the fruits of their labor. I remember when it was a national scandal on Fox News when Obama went for a bike ride with a helmet on.
