The grift continues. Who in their right mind would book something on the tip of Florida with world leaders during hurricane season?

No it's not....I want you to tell me how US is not the land of the free....?
I know you're not asking me but I just want to share my thoughts on this.
I'm a US citizen and for the most part, I love living here. But the land of the free, it is not.
For a start, I have to carry a government issued ID.
Every time I enter or leave, I have to give finger print and Photo info.
The patriot act has allowed the CIA to listen to all my calls (and read this, hi CIA).
The US has the highest incarceration rates in the world. Thousands are jailed for crimes that aren't crimes in a large part of the country.
Student loan debt is so high that graduates are tied in to the US system where, in a lot of cases, wages take loan repayments in to consideration. For example, a graduating nurse who has paid for their education would not be able to afford to work anywhere outside the US.
The US has so many regulations and standards that are not recognized out side of America that migrating with a US qualification is very hard.
If you are a legal resident but not a citizen, there are a million and one restrictions on your freedom.
In many states it's near impossible for women to have free control over their own bodies.
In many states felons who've served their time don't have the freedom to vote.

Lets compare this to the Republic of Ireland.
You don't have to carry a state ID.
You don't have to give bio metrics entering or leaving the country.
To the best of my knowledge, no one is bothered listening to your calls (unless it's the CIA at Shannon)
Incarceration rates are low in comparison
Student loan dept is almost non existent, Students all travel freely to other countries during and after college.
Irish people can freely live and work in 27(26) other EU countries and will still be able to live and work freely in the UK post Brexit. As well as work visa arrangements with far more countries than the US.
Women now have freedom to choose what happens their bodies.
and on and on.

I actually don't really know what makes America the land of the free.
Smacks of patriotic marketing/brainwashing to me.

Anyhoo, appologies for butting in but having gone through the process of becoming a US citizen, this always bugged me.

Think he has been banned.

Ruari.....like yourself I am a lover of both liberty and America.

I lived there for a decade and both my daughters were born there.

But one thing I have always said.

If it wasn’t for the fact they speak English as their official tongue, the USA would seem like a very foreign country to people from these islands :)

For many of the reasons you stare and for many more as well.

yup, have to agree. Often, when I come home, I kinda get the 'ah sher you didn't really emigrate, you only went to America!'
I think what really hit me is the insular life is here (which also flys in the face of freedom for me).
When it comes to measurements/currency/sport/language and more, there is a real 'this is how we do it and we wont listen to any suggestion of change. It's as if America invented English or the imperial system.
Immigrants are expected to leave their old ways (which often are newer ways) behind and assimilate, which is fine, but there's a real unwillingness to accept ways of newer immigrants.
With the latest immigrants living in the digital age, there is no longer a need to assimilate and with a hesitation to accept other cultures for a section of society, immigrant populations are becoming more ghettoized than ever before. You can live in a Guatemalan or El Salvadorian community for years now without dealing with mainstream USA.
At the same time there is a real hesitancy to learn about native American culture/society.
It's a complicated place, I've only seen the tip of the iceberg!
