don't think you're being snide at all. I appreciated the recommendation!
Was listening to an interesting piece on Sammy Davis Jr and Nixon the other day, they played tape of Nixon catching himself just as he started using the N word.
It's hard to judge the damage Trump is doing while we're in the middle of it. It'll be interesting to see how he stacks up against Nixon when this mess is all done.

In his own way though, Nixon really did try to help people, so long as they were 'his' type of people (he said horrible things about black people, even by the standards of the day, for example, but took black entrepreneurship and investment initiatives seriously). He understood class resentment and snobbery far better than any President since. He actually was of Trump-voter stalk, sneered upon, passed over, humiliated...

Nixon, obviously unlike Trump, was also very intelligent, and had real strategic vision (the blood of millions of Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians, Bangledeshis, Chileans etc notwithstanding, of course).

Trump touches the same nerve among American voters, but in a much more cruel, selfish, and brutal way.

He is farce to Nixon's tragedy (to borrow from Marx).

Oh, no question. Believe me, I have not forgotten nor forgiven and my family has deep personal ties with the Bushes.

Guess who advised GHWB to pardon everyone associated with Iran-Contra?

His Attorney General, and now Trump AG, Bill Barr.

I'm not denying Trump's potential, I just don't think he's earned a regular spot on the first team just yet ; )

I suppose that's fair. I mean, to my knowledge, he's not engaged in an all-out torture regime or invasion yet.

Unless you count the one he's engaged in with regard to those who care about institutions, traditions, language and safety of those here at home.

I'd say wait until he's killed his first 100,000 or so before giving him the #7 shirt

You don't believe he is a saint so you understand he is quite capable of ugly/illegal/immoral behavior, correct?

He was investigated at the behest of a Republican AG while the Republican Party controlled every lever of government at the Federal level and the investigation was headed by a Republican. Seven members of his campaign or personal orbit have been indicted or pled guilty. Hundreds of contacts with foreign governments, notably Russian, were conveniently "forgotten" by campaign staff and close personal ties when it is already known the FBI is investigating illegal activity by Russia designed to have an impact on the election. We have Congressional testimony by a member of the Trump campaign regarding communication from another member of the Trump campaign identifying Russia as having stolen emails from the Clinton campaign. I could go on and on.

When the teenager who has previously been caught stealing bicycles from other kids in the neighborhood and kicking other people's dogs for fun is accused of being seen lurking around your house earlier in the day after you come home to find your house burgled, I'm going to take one guess as to who you think might have stolen your stuff...

Smoke and fire.

I think a lot those involved in politics is capable of ugly, immoral and illegal behavior. However I don't think Trump did anything illegal during his campaign.

Politics is a dirty game, so much so the DNC/Clinton also liaised with Russians for the dossier. That's an entirely separate issue though, which also needs to be investigated.

I don't see the point your making about the AG, and Mueller being Republicans. There were plenty of Democrat leaning folk involved with the investigation.

If you want to believe that those investigating Trump couldn't put their political preferance's aside, then what makes you so sure all the other investigations into Trump by the SDNY, house committee etc are going to be ok ?

Do you believe SCHIFF can be impartial ?

As for the congressional testimony, surely you don't mean COHEN ?

Sounds as though you have more respectful for a convicted criminal than Mueller and the AG.

Anyway, who knows you might get what your after with the SDNY investigation, but hey you might not. Time will tell.

do you think he gets another 2 year term...

all I read on here is how bad he is, yet it seems he does have big support too..

Just means that there is a huge percentage of simpletons in America which is hardly a suprise. Add the billionaires/millionaires who benefit from his tax breaks, you can see where he gets his support.

You might like Rick Perlstein's Nixonland

Not trying to be snide, by the way - I think everyone in this thread assumes I always am.

It is just interesting to consider in light of Trump today. The late 60s and 1970s were.... above and beyond in so many ways.
If you haven't already you may want to supplement that with Perlstein's preceding book, Before the Storm, which examines the advent of the modern strain of American conservatism through the prism of the Barry Goldwater campaign in 1964 and its immediate aftermath, setting the scene for Nixonland.

Or the kids he oversaw the standardised torture (in a very real, if not traditional sense) of on the southern border.

You don't think he did anything illegal during the campaign? He is listed as Individual 1 in a felony case of campaign finance violations for which Michael Cohen pleaded guilty.

"Politics is a dirty game" and then a diversion to the Clintons? Is that supposed to give Trump cover for his actions?

You asked why people want to believe the worst about him. Well, the answer is there is very good reason to believe the worst about him. He and his campaign were being investigated at the initiation of his own DoJ, led by Republicans, while Republicans held both houses of Congress and the White House. It wasn't a "hoax". It's not a sham. It is fact that 37 different people/groups have been indicted by the Special Prosecutor. There is damn good reason to believe the worst about him and I haven't even mentioned his wholly revolting personal and business life.

Adam Schiff is immaterial and just another diversion by you and, no, the Congressional Testimony was by a member of the Trump Campaign. Cohen was just his lawyer.

What sounds you may hear are not of my making. ;)
