What's it matter? I'm not saying I agreed with them. I'm saying that they ran themselves in a way that was acceptable. I don't think that's the case anymore.
I don't really remember/wasn't paying enough attention but it seems that the antics of todays GOP can be traced back to Gingrich's shutdown in 95.
The republicans realized they could be absolute melts and their base would eat it up.
It was the birth of 'owning the libs' and it was perfectly timed just a few years after changes to broadcast laws and a few before citizens united.

sticking just to Republicans:

read about how the Iraq War came into being

or read about Iran-Contra (or worse still, the massacres it was used to fund)

or the Ford Administration and East Timor

or Nixon, and the secret illegal incineration of 600,000 Cambodians on a tactically diversionary whim (among many other possibilities)

or Eisenhower and Guatemala, Iran, and Indonesia

Trump is not even in the first division yet in terms of abuses of executive power

Fair enough. I'll admit I'm not old enough to remember Gingrich beyond a terrible presidential candidate and a useful TV idiot. But I still stand by my feeling that up until they gained control of the senate during Obama's years that they were at least respectable. That's not to say I either agree with them or that they haven't made massive errors. But I thought they at least had some principles and were willing to try to effectively govern based off of those even if they didn't quite align with where I sat. I don't believe that at all anymore.

indeed.

Interesting how you only focus on foreign policy.

For me circumventing Congress by declaring a false national emergency to fund a campaign promise against a false bogeyman ranks pretty highly up there.

ha, interesting to think about how these guys stack up in the crap-index!
The results of Eisenhowers Iranian coup are still reverberating in a big way today, infact Trump is way off the top on foreign policy but he still has time to arm Saudi Arabia with nukes!
Domestically Bush 2 has to be up there for economic incompetence.
When it comes to damaging the reputation of the office (edit: and the country), for me, Trump has a clear lead over Nixon.

Not trying to be snide, by the way - I think everyone in this thread assumes I always am.

It is just interesting to consider in light of Trump today. The late 60s and 1970s were.... above and beyond in so many ways.

don't think you're being snide at all. I appreciated the recommendation!
Was listening to an interesting piece on Sammy Davis Jr and Nixon the other day, they played tape of Nixon catching himself just as he started using the N word.
It's hard to judge the damage Trump is doing while we're in the middle of it. It'll be interesting to see how he stacks up against Nixon when this mess is all done.

Violations of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. Giving top secret security clearance to his son-in-law over the objections of the national security apparatus. Giving top secret information to an enemy of the state.

We could go on and on and on...

I mean... circumventing Congress to sell weapons to Iran (breaking your own embargo) in order to raise funds for death squads to overthrow a democratically elected regime in Central America, then destroying the incriminating documents and lying about it all under oath??

And ^this^ was a man even Obama took pains to lavish with praise.

Given how quickly everything seems to disappear down the memory hole in America, I'd only be half-surprised to see Trump on the currency before I'm gone.

I just want to know why people want to believe the worst about him and that he's guilty ?

I don't believe he is a saint, and feel he has plenty of improvement both as a political figure and in relation to some policies etc, but it's amazing how many want him to fail so badly.
You don't believe he is a saint so you understand he is quite capable of ugly/illegal/immoral behavior, correct?

He was investigated at the behest of a Republican AG while the Republican Party controlled every lever of government at the Federal level and the investigation was headed by a Republican. Seven members of his campaign or personal orbit have been indicted or pled guilty. Hundreds of contacts with foreign governments, notably Russian, were conveniently "forgotten" by campaign staff and close personal ties when it is already known the FBI is investigating illegal activity by Russia designed to have an impact on the election. We have Congressional testimony by a member of the Trump campaign regarding communication from another member of the Trump campaign identifying Russia as having stolen emails from the Clinton campaign. I could go on and on.

When the teenager who has previously been caught stealing bicycles from other kids in the neighborhood and kicking other people's dogs for fun is accused of being seen lurking around your house earlier in the day after you come home to find your house burgled, I'm going to take one guess as to who you think might have stolen your stuff...

Smoke and fire.

Oh, no question. Believe me, I have not forgotten nor forgiven and my family has deep personal ties with the Bushes.

Guess who advised GHWB to pardon everyone associated with Iran-Contra?

His Attorney General, and now Trump AG, Bill Barr.
