I have no problem with the Republican party as it existed up to some point when McConnell was playing his obstruction games with Obama.

when were you born?

What's it matter? I'm not saying I agreed with them. I'm saying that they ran themselves in a way that was acceptable. I don't think that's the case anymore.

I don't really remember/wasn't paying enough attention but it seems that the antics of todays GOP can be traced back to Gingrich's shutdown in 95.What's it matter? I'm not saying I agreed with them. The republicans realized they could be absolute melts and their base would eat it up.
It was the birth of 'owning the libs' and it was perfectly timed just a few years after changes to broadcast laws and a few before citizens united.

Fair enough. I'll admit I'm not old enough to remember Gingrich beyond a terrible presidential candidate and a useful TV idiot. But I still stand by my feeling that up until they gained control of the senate during Obama's years that they were at least respectable. That's not to say I either agree with them or that they haven't made massive errors. But I thought they at least had some principles and were willing to try to effectively govern based off of those even if they didn't quite align with where I sat. I don't believe that at all anymore.indeed.
sticking just to Republicans:
read about how the Iraq War came into being
or read about Iran-Contra (or worse still, the massacres it was used to fund)
or the Ford Administration and East Timor
or Nixon, and the secret illegal incineration of 600,000 Cambodians on a tactically diversionary whim (among many other possibilities)
or Eisenhower and Guatemala, Iran, and Indonesia
Trump is not even in the first division yet in terms of abuses of executive power
indeed.

ha, interesting to think about how these guys stack up in the crap-index!indeed.

Interesting how you only focus on foreign policy.
For me circumventing Congress by declaring a false national emergency to fund a campaign promise against a false bogeyman ranks pretty highly up there.

The results of Eisenhowers Iranian coup are still reverberating in a big way today, infact Trump is way off the top on foreign policy but he still has time to arm Saudi Arabia with nukes!
Domestically Bush 2 has to be up there for economic incompetence.
When it comes to damaging the reputation of the office (edit: and the country), for me, Trump has a clear lead over Nixon.
don't think you're being snide at all. I appreciated the recommendation! You might like Rick Perlstein's Nixonland

Not trying to be snide, by the way - I think everyone in this thread assumes I always am.
It is just interesting to consider in light of Trump today. The late 60s and 1970s were.... above and beyond in so many ways.
Violations of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. Giving top secret security clearance to his son-in-law over the objections of the national security apparatus. Giving top secret information to an enemy of the state.ha, interesting to think about how these guys stack up in the crap-index!

We could go on and on and on...
You don't believe he is a saint so you understand he is quite capable of ugly/illegal/immoral behavior, correct?I just want to know why people want to believe the worst about him and that he's guilty ?
I don't believe he is a saint, and feel he has plenty of improvement both as a political figure and in relation to some policies etc, but it's amazing how many want him to fail so badly.
Oh, no question. Believe me, I have not forgotten nor forgiven and my family has deep personal ties with the Bushes.I mean... circumventing Congress to sell weapons to Iran (breaking your own embargo) in order to raise funds for death squads to overthrow a democratically elected regime in Central America, then destroying the incriminating documents and lying about it all under oath??
And ^this^ was a man even Obama took pains to lavish with praise.
Given how quickly everything seems to disappear down the memory hole in America, I'd only be half-surprised to see Trump on the currency before I'm gone.
