"Claim: A white man was beaten by a group of black people for voting Trump.

WHAT'S TRUE: Chicago police are investigating a battery incident involving a 50-year-old white male victim who was attacked by five black males and females.

WHAT'S FALSE: Police say the incident stemmed from a traffic altercation, not politics.

Origin:On 10 November 2016, conspiracy theory web site InfoWars posted a video of a white man being pushed and kicked by a group of younger African-American people. (The article bore the inflammatory headline, "SHOCK VIDEO: BLACK MOB VICIOUSLY BEATS WHITE TUMP VOTER.")

The roughly 30-second video shows an older white man in a blue sweatshirt getting pushed to the ground and kicked by the younger people, while several people can be heard off-camera accusing him of voting for Donald Trump:

A longer version of the video posted to Twitter is accompanied by the song "[Poor language removed] Donald Trump," and shows the man clinging to his car and being dragged as someone drives away in it.

Chicago police told us that officers responded to a battery call on 9 November 2016 in which the 50-year-old victim reported being battered in a traffic-related altercation involving three unidentified males and two females — one of whom drove away in the man's car. A spokeswoman told us:

Our Area North detectives are investigating. We’re aware of the video. The [incident] report has nothing political in nature. We forwarded the video to detectives, so they’re investigating.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital in good condition, she said.

The clip has since been shared by white supremacist publication The Daily Stormer with the following text:

"We are bringing back law and order to this country.
The age of the rabid monkey is closing.
Let them take to the streets for their last big hurrah.
Because in a couple of short months, America becomes Trumpland.
And in Trumpland, criminals are punished with swift brutality. And cops are immune from prosecution."

While it's clear the man in the video was assaulted, it seems from initial police reports that the assault stemmed from a traffic incident. Bystanders are heard taunting him for voting for Trump, but it's not clear from the video itself or the statements from police whether he did in fact say he voted for Trump, and if he did, whether that was the impetus for the attack.

It's also not clear, as some publications are claiming, that the battery suspects in the video were supporters of Trump's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton. One woman can be heard off camera asking, "Are you gonna pay for my [Poor language removed]?" which seems to align with the police statement that the fight stemmed from a traffic accident resulting in property damage.

Further, the racial undertones of some of the posts surrounding the video raises the possibility that the incident is being exploited in order to further enflame tensions on the heels of a charged and contentious election.

The Californian secession issue is an interesting one. Not sure it would happen, but there's now a load more reasons for it to do so.

Same would have been the case for the likes of Texas if Clinton had won, but the case wouldn't have been as strong.

That's the problem with having two such awful candidates in a nation of many fairly independent states. If California - the sixth largest economy in the world - aren't represented at all by the President, then the incentive to stay in the Union is pretty much nullified.

It's a long shot, but the possibility of the break up of the USA little by little is plausible now.

assorted "exits" are a ridiculous pipe dream.

more autonomy for cities might make everyone happier though

ooh , never even thought of that...some of the states are so heavily rep or dem

as a side point, having a go at people for voting 3rd party in these states is a bit off, actually makes alot more sense to vote 3rd party in locked down states

Not really, they've already applied for it to go to ballot.

It depends on how silly Trump is. If he follows through with the Muslim ban and that wall, then California will be severely enticed to leave.

until they start thinking seriously about what would actually be involved, legally

It's happened before obviously (US Civil War), could happen again, albeit before Trump I would have (and I think I have on here before in relation to Texas) laughed it off.

A constitutional amendment. But if they won a referendum, the states would be obliged to follow it through due to democracy in action. The US senate being forced to deny the will of the electorate? You'd at that point risk civil war.

It's not as far-fetched as it initially seems.

More information is always good. The fact that racist a-holes are leveraging it for their own purposes doesn't make this any more acceptable.

Look at it for what it is. It's not racist to point out that this is happening. I am concerned. The link wasn't der Sturmer, it was Fox News.

off the top of my head:
what currency do they use?
do they have free trade with the rest of the country?
do previous trade agreements with the rest of the world still hold?
are there open borders?
does everyone get a passport?
how do companies located in and outside california function?
what about the billions of dollars in defense and agricultural subsidies california enjoys?

is an America shorn of the biggest concentration of liberal influence going to be in the mood to be nice?

i grew up someone that has tried this and failed several times, based on far more serious divides and grievances than california feels. it is much more far-fetched than it initially seems

and people thought scotland leaving the UK was an absolute fantasy 20 odd years ago...

i also posted without comment. there is a lot going on that we should all be concerned about

I'd support it.

look how close scotland came, it doent matter if its a good idea or not! just if enough people THINK its a good idea..

Their politicians are that stupid, but I have a hard time believing that their electorate would be. They would be an independent, earthquake prone nation with no water supply, natural resources that were exhausted a century ago and an economy that was entirely dependent on the country they had just voted to leave.

All the talk of secession proves is that there are as many idiot liberals as there are idiot conservatives.
