do they have free trade with the rest of the country?
do previous trade agreements with the rest of the world still hold?
are there open borders?
does everyone get a passport?
how do companies located in and outside california function?
what about the billions of dollars in defense and agricultural subsidies california enjoys?

is an America shorn of the biggest concentration of liberal influence going to be in the mood to be nice?

i grew up someone that has tried this and failed several times, based on far more serious divides and grievances than california. it is much more far-fetched than it initially seems

They wouldn't just cut ties and leave mate obviously. All of those issues are negotiated, in a similar way to the UK with Europe.

Just like Brexit, it wouldn't be ideal or even sensible, but it's possible.

Their politicians are that stupid, but I have a hard time believing that their electorate would be. They would be an independent, earthquake prone nation with no water supply, natural resources that were exhausted a century ago and an economy that was entirely dependent on the country they had just voted to leave.

Water supply and natural resources wouldn't be an issue for them, as they just import it. The US wouldn't switch off the taps on California - they'd just trade for it, like the USA has traded for oil with the middle east and so on.

Independence doesn't mean being like a video game and collecting resources to survive.

Again though, I couldn't actually logically argue for it myself, but my point is that it could become so emotionally tempting as a result of a lunatic Trump administration that a state like California would feel they had no other choice. It'd be like abolishing guns out of the blue - Texas and the likes would be clamouring for the same thing, and if it did go to referendum they'd be highly tempted to secede on that sole basis alone.

Whether those points stand scrutiny or not, there's a lot to put to an electorate and say "prove us wrong".

As seen with Trump, you can say any old crap and as long as you're forceful with it, people will think you're telling the truth.

Toronto... but I haven't really been living there for more than a decade now.

Haven't been to QC since I was a kid, but Montreal is wonderful! I've got family there. Glad you enjoyed it!
