I can see how it benefits Trump but when do you think chaos it a smart and valid strategy for the country Pete? How about you give a couple of examples?

I truly believe that he will get a better deal from the EU regarding trade. The EU just do not know how to deal with him. His off the wall approach may or may not bring NK to a sensible conclusion, but I think he is right in trying to bring Putin in from the cold. Putin is a thug, but he understands power and usually knows how to play the Obamas, Mays, and Merkels of this World. Trump is different and may actually help Russia and its people join the rest of the world.......

How does being chaotic and erratic improve the likelihood of a deal? Being clear on what you will and won’t accept is far more likely in my experience to get the other party to an agreement than being an unreliable partner who you never know if they will renege or change their mind,

Oh yes, things are going swimmingly with Putin, not like he is playing with Trump one little bit.

The World Cup showed the rest of the world the real Russia mate, not some spanner like Trump.

I don't mean to pick on you, but FFS, they don't live in huts! They're not a lost Amazonian tribe!

The Soviet Union was more or less integrated into global capital markets as early as the 70s. The debacle that ideologues like Jeffrey Sachs, on behalf of "the rest of the world", imposed on them in the 90s is the main reason why Putin is still so popular there today. And if wasn't for Russian money pouring into "the rest of the world" via London, the UK would have lost its last leg to stand on at least a decade ago.

Don’t worry about picking on me. Russia is obviously a first world nation, I was more thinking about the fact that most Western and developed nations, who tbh the Russian people are more naturally aligned, tend to regard Russia as ‘the enemy’. This has not changed for decades and it needs to. The U.K. and London does not need Russian money. You might like to reflect on the fact that the U.K. is America’s largest inward investor, with some 20% of its total, about 20 times greater than China, and bigger than any other two countries combined. I know we are little, but we play a good game.....

Well Obama and co did such a good job with their approach, let’s see what happens over the next few years.....

sorry, what do you mean here?

yes, better relations with Russia would be a good thing... but not at any cost, and it's pretty doubtful that the likes of Donald Trump are likely to manage it in any lasting or meaningful way.

Russia is not exactly doing swimmingly these days, but they are capable enough of holding their own in foreign affairs, and certainly don't need American demagogues' charity or pity

But they do need money and business. They exist by selling oil, gas, natural minerals etc etc, which is really unsustainable as technology moves on. They also have a large military and a massive nuclear arsenal. They want to play the superpower that they are not, economically they are nowhere and even militarily they know they would be beaten. But they have history, a history of a proud European nation but absolutely decimated by war, and they are fearful of being surrounded/enclosed which is what NATO and the EU are currently doing to them. Their ‘foreign affairs’ Are still based on Cold War politics. Something has to change, and Trump knows this. He may make a total arse of it, but something has to change.....
