I use the term nationalist in a loose sense. I'm reffering to patriotic people who believe in the nation.

You're assuming people are wise enough to appreciate the distinction between patriotism and unfettered nationalism. I don't share your faith in human nature.

If another Hitlwr were to come to power, I'd blame those who voted for him - no matter what excuse they trotted out.

who decides who belongs to the nation? does Mesut Ozil belong to the nation? would he still, if he was a crap footballer? do his parents?

the problem is that i suspect on the street, i would pass AfD types' "belonging to the nation" test much more than him, even though i don't speak german and have only ever visited. you might think about why that is...

I'm not clear that the history of German nationalism is hugely encouraging.

TBF there is a difference between German nationalism of the classical kind, and German nationalism of the romantic / volkische kind.

The first is based on genuine pride in who they are and the very real achievements of German music, science, art etc; the latter kind was based on an imaginary fantasy world in which they were the master race (albeit someone else actually ruled the world) and in which they didn't talk themselves into the first war and then didn't get into the second because they couldn't accept that they had been beaten in the first war by a larger, richer, more well armed, better trained and more technologically advanced alliance comprised of almost all the major world nations of the time.

Fortunately reality has managed to get rid of almost all the volkische types.
