We are privileged to live in an advanced liberal democracy.

Sure it's not perfect, but when you travel around and see other places, and political systems, it makes you realize how lucky we are.

Democracy is flawed, but it's better than the system they've got in North Korea, or any other undemocratic form of government for that matter.

Without universal suffrage we would never have had the welfare state or the NHS. The working-class would still be living in Edwardian times.

There's an interesting piece in the New Yorker about democracy, and in particular how effective it is in a world in which so many voters seem so ignorant of the things they've voting for.

I'm sure we can think of many examples from this side of the pond too. Does democracy fail in the face of such ignorance?
