I find this retrospect Carlo bashing unfair. Lets not forget where we came from prior to him. Koeman, Allardyce...it was a horrorshow of tactics and lunatic buys. Koeman, who added Klaasen on top of his other 6 Attacking Midfielders, just because of his inflated head that we need Dutch players (im Dutch, we dont.) Duncan then at least founded the basics of going back to 4-4-2 because that was the only fit for that team. Carlo took that 4-4-2 and played it for the first few months very succesful. Nevertheless it was still a disjointed team and him experimenting then with diamond 4-4-2, and 5-3-2 or 5-3-1-1 was where things got lost. The team lost its mojo and self believe. carlo scrapped a few unbelievable away wins, often just 1-0 or something, to then collapse at home because of individual player mistakes. Holgate losing a ball, resulting in a goal for opposition, who then dug in and boom, carlos tactics out the window. The last 2 months yu could just see the disbelief in his eyes.
Me, I didnt blame him one bit for taking the Real job. It was that, or another year of scrapping by, hoping to get near top 6, wich then would improve attracting better players and keeping guys like Jrod. With the notion he knew the current transferwindow was gonna play ot ike it does now: hope for the best in the last 2 or 3 days.
In the end he got us 60 points, he gave some good foundations, had quite a number of players that stepped up or fell through (Iwobi an exception maybe). The succes of Benitez is partly because of carlo imo. So lets not burn him to the ground, wish him good luck in madrid and that is that. Onwards.
