I do remember them conceding quite a few set pieces, including a couple against us while he was manager.

I think a mixture of zonal and man-to-man is the best way to go. Need a guy near post to get a rid of everything going there and maybe one guy on the near side of the box in case they play it short and a fella on the back post. Everyone else should be picking somebody up.

Yep, one on each post, one on the edge of the box covering an underhit corner/short corner and then keep three or maybe four up top to make the opposition think twice about sending loads of people up and the rest marking a man or around the box.

There was an article posted here not long ago that stated statistically hybrid marking systems actually conceded more. Maybe it's down to players not getting it etc.

We could go man to man and still let them in....it,s all about the quality of players for me and LEADERSHIP on the pitch.

It's not working at the moment, but with VAR likely in the PL next season, its worth persisting with.

Let's be ahead of the curve for once. Hopefuly zonal is being deployed in the youth set-up and is a requirment of any new coach that Marcel selects (when that time eventually comes).

Just get Tosun off front post duties.

Some good points here.....
Var is coming & zonal is the way to go....
Tosun off the front post....
We must persevere & get this right....

DCL unlucky that his flick on went straight to Billings btw....

It really isn't so much the system and more just using the system correctly. We've decided to go with zonal so let's start winning the ball at the near post and we will be fine. Man to man isn't guaranteed to work like some think. Mustafi goal today was man to man by a Cardiff team with way more size.

It really was.

Billing was left completely unmarked in the centre of the goal, about 7 yards out, he’s about 6’ 3” and obviously decent in the air and there was no one within 2 yards of him.

The reason the ball fell to him was because DCL flicked it that way.

If he'd made a slightly different contact - literally any other part of his head - and it could have gone anywhere else.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Billing was stood centre of the goal completely unmarked and with a free header.

This. Zonal marking works as well if not better than man-marking if done correctly. When a man-marking system falls down the player generally gets the blame but it's as much a problem with the system as any goal conceded with ZM.

A team set up to man-mark can be manipulated, have their good defensive players pulled out of effective areas and are susceptible to planned movements or overloads.

Everton have conceded 7 goals so far - 6 have been from set pieces.

Watford shipped 44 goals under Silva, 17 of which came from set-pieces; Hull were breached 36 times while he was in charge, 14 of those were via dead balls. The percentage for both clubs was more than 38 per cent.

The Premier League's total of goals conceded from set-pieces last season was 27.4 per cent. It is a worry.

All that said, only the other day he is saying he'll only ever manage Zonal;

“First, it's the best way because I believe you can be stronger and play in that way in that moment,” Silva told the ECHO.
“It is something I have done since my first day as a coach and so it is my way.

Self belief/strong task focus is good, stubbornness isn't.
